over the last few years, i've written/researched/talked *a lot* about electronic monitoring in cook county. so i was dismayed (but not surprised) to see this op-ed from state's attorney eileen burke filled with inaccuracies/misleading statements—many of which we've heard before. let's unpack:

Cook County state’s attorney: The electronic monitoring system is broken
As of Aug. 7, 79 people charged with murder or attempted murder and 154 people charged with sex crimes were on electronic monitoring.

Ya know…there’s not many a day I don’t stop and think about how much respect I have for Paul Ryan. I loathed him when he was in office, but he had the integrity to see the Trump storm coming and say “no ma’am…no thanks!” Pack his bags and head home. 👍🏾👍🏾

🧵1/2 About 90 minutes into my first Consent Decree hearing and I’m struck (again) by how few people really know what the Consent Decree is, why Chicago is under one, or what it actually means for police accountability. Real talk: this is where a lot of the actual work and tension around reform lives

So, is it just me, or was that CCPSA meeting a wild affair? I was enthralled when I walked outside in the pouring rain and saw the line extend from Thalia Hall to Racine. I was incensed when I heard they turned people away. I am in love with the raucous voice of this city. We will continue to fight

Alderman Raymond Lopez will talk about a lot of things on social media. One thing he oddly won’t discuss is the group of residents who rallied in front of his office, calling for his resignation, as well as how his ward night was coincidentally canceled the same evening. Isn’t that ironic? #chicago

I am here at the Broadview Detention. A large ISP contingent here. Just in the 30 minutes I’ve been here, it “feels” like ISP is working in concert with ICE officials. They also keep widening the perimeter on a crowd standing and chanting “peaceful protestors.” This is not good.

I served in the Illinois Army National Guard. I know what it means to patrol American streets. Trump’s threat to send the Guard to Chicago is political theater and an abuse of power. Chicago belongs to its people, not to any man trying to play strongman.
