@denali.bsky.social Morning! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all you shared on your most recent appearance on Ben's show. Absolutely appreciated it and loved listening.

over the last few years, i've written/researched/talked *a lot* about electronic monitoring in cook county. so i was dismayed (but not surprised) to see this op-ed from state's attorney eileen burke filled with inaccuracies/misleading statements—many of which we've heard before. let's unpack:
chicagotribune.com
Cook County state’s attorney: The electronic monitoring system is broken
As of Aug. 7, 79 people charged with murder or attempted murder and 154 people charged with sex crimes were on electronic monitoring.

3/3 That means registering voters, knocking doors, talking with our neighbors and bringing more people into the civic life of our community. We’re building the team now. If you want in, DM me.

2/3 ...and the unfinished work of police accountability. But this campaign is about more than asking people to vote for me. Only 22.2% of Englewood voters turned out in the 2023 municipal election. We don’t just ask people for votes. We help people participate.

🧵1/3 I’m running for reelection to Chicago’s 7th Police District Council. I’m proud of what we’ve built over the last three years, including seeing a priority I developed with community members adopted by CCPSA. I’m working on mental-health alternatives, traffic stops, investigatory stops...

I was knee deep in work today, so I ordered delivery from Reggie’s Music Joint. Their wings are amazing (best in downtown area) and big surprise, their tomato basil soup is really good too!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

6/6 Leadership isn’t something you discover every four years during election season. It’s something you cultivate. Chicago doesn’t have a talent problem. It has an attention problem. We’ve got the people. We’ve got the raw materials. Now let’s invest in the leaders already doing the work.

5/6 …about the future of Chicago politics, this is the bench. Invest in these leaders. Mentor them. Challenge them. Support them. And beyond the District Councils, look at leaders and candidates like Palecek, Abughazaleh, Blaha, Ryan, and so many others helping shape Chicago’s next chapter.

4/6 Believe it or not, that’s almost the easy part. The real work starts after Election Day. It’s years of learning the landscape, building relationships, earning trust, taking criticism, making mistakes, and putting in countless hours trying to make the role mean something. If we’re serious…

3/6 And make no mistake, that alone is no small thing. I know incredible people who would make phenomenal elected officials. They shine like a vibranium penny. But they won’t toss their hat in the ring. Running is hard. Winning is harder.

2/6 Chicago has an entire cohort of elected District Councilors. Not every District Councilor fits this description. Some absolutely don’t. But enough do that we should all be paying attention. Many are organizers, educators, advocates, and neighborhood leaders who stepped up and ran.

🧵1/6 Every week I see people asking where Chicago’s next generation of progressive leaders is. My answer? They’re already here. We just aren’t paying enough attention.

Ya know…there’s not many a day I don’t stop and think about how much respect I have for Paul Ryan. I loathed him when he was in office, but he had the integrity to see the Trump storm coming and say “no ma’am…no thanks!” Pack his bags and head home. 👍🏾👍🏾

OPINION: Y’all really want to create a youth incarceration machine over teen trends, huh? • The TRiiBE
We cannot have this conversation about “teen trends” in Chicago without addressing the racial component embedded within it.

2/2 Curious what folks here think. What do you know about the Consent Decree? What do you want to know? And what do you think should be different about how it’s working right now? If you want to talk it through or learn more, my DMs are open.

🧵1/2 About 90 minutes into my first Consent Decree hearing and I’m struck (again) by how few people really know what the Consent Decree is, why Chicago is under one, or what it actually means for police accountability. Real talk: this is where a lot of the actual work and tension around reform lives

4/4 Shoutout to Bike Lane Uprising for helping connect transportation, street design, and public safety. I’m bringing this back to my fellow District Councilors and want more of these cross-lane conversations. If you’ve got thoughts about transit, safety, or access, my inbox is open.

3/4 We did a ride-along from the Western Orange Line to the Metra BNSF Western stop and back. Some of the best parts were just the conversations along the way. Good to see Ald. Anthony Quezada, Ald. Matt Martin, Rep. Theresa Mah, and hear from CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen.

2/4 It was also my first visit to the Chicago Park District HQ, and I appreciated hearing from Supt. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa about how these systems intersect. If we’re serious about safety, we have to be serious about how people get to work, school, appointments, and home.

4/4 I stopped voting by the numbers years ago. I dig in and vote my values, even if I’m the only one. While everyone screams about a house divided, they keep playing the same games and hoping to get different results next time around. They won’t. Shame on WBEZ for refusing to rise above the average.

3/4 I’m probably sensitive to this because I’ll never be anyone’s golden boy. But I’m good. I’m smart. I’m capable. I have strong ethics and a real sense of community. Media like WBEZ wouldn’t give me the time of day.

2/4 That race has 11 candidates. Yet the only ones treated as viable are the ones with money and institutional backing. We play along with that game while pretending to be shocked by how broken our political system is.

Dion McGill @dionmcgill.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
🧵1/4 I really hate that we can’t trust the media to give equal representation to candidates in political races. I saw a discussion today about the US Senate Democratic primary debate between Stratton, Kelly, and Krishnamoorthi, framed as a choice between the three “major” candidates.
