Follow the Money: Opening 56 Years of the Fiscal Record of Our Democracy
The U.S. Census Bureau has recorded what every state, county, city and township raises and spends since 1967, and it has been effectively out of reach. Today we are re-releasing it as a free API, an interactive explorer and a bulk download, aligned across 56 years so a query returns a continuous series. It is a record you can contribute to.

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.

I have been working on NGC 2392 (Lion Nebula) bit by bit over the past couple of weeks. Pretty happy with it! As always, high quality image and perhaps overly verbose information is available at my Flickr gallery: flic.kr/p/2swHfCQ
A heavenly view of one of our friendly neighborhood planetary nebulas, the Lion Nebula. It's circular in appearance with cometary knots streaming outward from the center, making up the "hair" of the lion's mane. The lion's face is a brightly outlined inner shell that kinda looks like a spaghetti nest with a bright star nestled in the center. Numerous background galaxies are sprinkled around the image, along with a handful of stars. The lion has a blueish mane and a pinkish face with a deep, dark cyan center. The background galaxies are subtly colored with yellows, oranges, and reds. The few stars are more or less white.

We're constantly told that women can never compete with men and yet Kelsey Pfendler is about to set the record for the fastest solo row from California to Hawaii, beating the men's record by a full week. What an incredible feat of athleticism, endurance, and grit.
A promotional graphic featuring a photograph of a woman, Kelsey Pfendler, rowing a specialized ocean rowboat alone on open water under an overcast sky. The white boat is designed for long distances, featuring enclosed cabins at the bow and stern, solar panels on the rear cabin, and various mounted navigational antennas. The hull is decorated with vibrant pink, purple, and blue swirling wave graphics.
Several sponsor logos are visible along the side of the boat, including Pasha Hawaii, Hatch River Expeditions, Concept2, Güntner, and the cursive Lily logo near the stern.
