Feeling proud of where SpliceCraft is at right now. Still got more details to add and UI jank to solve, but powerful af and open source. Made, with love, for this community. Enjoy. SpliceCraft.bio

I think fresh perspectives and different ideas matter in science a lot but this is more about arrogance and thinking they have some wizardry, yes.

With AI making things worse in such cases, I think we will see more senior researchers withdrawing from such authorship style unless they trust the corresponding authors or collaborators in general. Possibly trusted groups will get more collaboration requests.

But I see a quite opposite pattern everywhere in academia. People rarely care about what significant contribution means. Also if you are an established researcher, suddenly a tiniest contribution makes you an author. So, sometimes, academia is a hopeless place for fairness.

When some people ask whether it is necessary to put my name on an article that I suggested a few ideas and design perspective, I tell them it depends on the context and the level of contribution. However there is no harm in acknowledging. Though people don’t care this, which is a bit sad.

It is tiring to convince people about being transparent about AI involvement in writing. If I need to go over every piece of text myself, why we bother writing together is my newest existential challenge academically.

I am not sure it helps to deal with such heatwaves we encountered last month in EU in general though. But yeah in the smart city country above, you will be surprised to see trees and green everywhere. It is not a coincidence or simply artisti. It is also keep the temp and humidity level controlled.

Disclaimer: I am not a city planning expert. We used to talk these with PhD students in the respective field while I was doing PhD in engineering.

One of the reasons why S’pore was a smart city was not simply infrastructure or digital adoption, but also the trees! They grow trees everywhere to control the heat in the city. Also it helps people to maintain good mood. Perhaps it is time for countries dealing w/heatwaves to make cities as such.

It is the same reason why I don’t want to work for some companies that they want to hire you as a university associated postdoc without no company/staff/salary benefits, and no intention for publishing. Go and hire a scientist, why do you hire as a postdoc? Nonsense for me.

Although I enjoy agentic tools, I have different mindsets for academia and industry jobs. We r already a sort of cheap labor in academia. There is no point of continuing this for profitable business model. If there is no transparent knowledge sharing, then we become even cheaper labor for industry.

It is funny ‘cause t competition. Claude has trained w our domain knowledge, evolved into pharma company. Somehow they r getting worse for t same cost. After witnessing this, I don’t want to use “free AI“ unless they really mean it. We are sharing our expertise with these companies free, no thanks.

I sometimes send draft resume to the companies. I sent to a Google associated company recently. They rejected but shortly after I received an email stating free credits to test Google sciency products.

Another example can be you have readings of 3 separate well seedings of cells from same treatment. Let’s say you have two 5000, then one 3000. You will have repeat this seeding with 3 replicates 2 more time. You will likely to have outliers every time. Is it seeding or reading? What to do etc.

F. B. Dincaslan @dincaslan.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
I can expand what I mean. let’s say you have 3 replicates for qPCR run of the given sample. Two of them are 23 but the third one is 11. They are from the same cDNA. It is likely to be technical error while loading. Do you exclude or include, and why and if so how kinda simple questions.

F. B. Dincaslan @dincaslan.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
The course planner can start simple such as, How to deal with messy data before any statistical tests applied ? What is the distinction between data cleaning or wrangling vs. data manipulation or bias ? How do you choose the right test/design before? etc.

F. B. Dincaslan @dincaslan.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
This may sometimes lead to data selection bias or misinterpretation of the results. I don’t think it is realistic that the data is consistent all the time. When to include or exclude is a big question mark.

F. B. Dincaslan @dincaslan.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
I appreciate the examples being from real datasets. I think there should also be a such course “hidden curriculum of data handling (for experimental biology)” for challenging data. Many of biologists don’t even know how to deal with variable data or outliers in different experimental setting.

Expert led AI summary prompts then cross checked as reviews might be a good example of 2. I don’t like it but it seems the norm nowadays..

When my mind is occupied with a lot of thoughts than I can’t think through at home, I play bullet chess continuously for hours since the last year of PhD. In fact, now, I am pretty good at it particularly. I sometimes think joining official tournaments to see my actual level.

I am in the field of RNA therapeutics. I noticed the puzzling of Claude whenever I query something related to my research area. Also, even Google responses lag. I assume whatever the AI tool they use (Gemini?), it also added some security/tracking features.

AI bills can be as big as a postdoc salary. Is the cost worth it?
Recent price hikes, usage limitations and unreliable outputs are causing some scientific researchers to think twice about using artificial intelligence.

I requested a pdf, as I could not access, from Nature paper correspondence working at a prestigious institution. I wonder how long it will take to reply me for this simple request. I will try first author as well. Perhaps I can ask the data as well.

They somehow published an errata. Yet, I still think it is not good idea for random people to write papers about a field that they are not actively involved in. It was not a small mistake for that many authors to miss.

This is crazy 🎭 I noticed an actual review paper peer reviewed and published at IF>6 journal under cell group. I notified the journal that there is something “bullshit” (w/formal language). The review is still there. They had nonsense tables with misleading info. Yet, no one did anything about it.

It is easy to spot work fully written by AI. People do not even bother to correct the nonsense. It is tiring. I also use AI tools. I am AI hyped for summaries, data analysis and advanced coding features. However, the expertise is required to make sure it’s reliability. Let’s use our brain more 🧠

It was hard to convince people to share reused/modified code details unless it is novel, when open source was optional. Some used to believe these reproducibility efforts were waste of time. I am glad that now it is mandatory.
