Julian Baumgartner made a youtube video walking through his restoration of this painting, with some interesting parts about its discovery and authentication. It's cool to see the before and after: youtu.be/KsB2Yac1JZs?...

I love the idea that mayors all over the world are looking at NYC and being inspired to up their game in their home cities.

I mean, every person in that theater is going to remember this for the rest of their lives and think twice about pulling out a phone. If enough people do it maybe we get herd immunity?

We're being told that if we sacrifice the rights of some people, then the rest of us get to keep our rights. We all know that's some BS.

That would be a very unserious opinion, luckily no one is saying that. Also I believe the topic here is anti-trans bigotry.

I think you’re wrong. What you call “public opinion” is 100% the product of intentional hate campaigns funded by Epstein-class fascists. If speech alone can conjure this level of “public opinion” when it’s against a minority, it can do the same when it’s in their defense. No excuses for cowardice.

Also Harriet is extremely pretty! Emma’s matchmaking strategy is basically, find a gentleman willing to overlook Harriet’s dubious parentage bc she’s beautiful. Since Emma is basically doing that herself, she fails to see the problem.

And btw it wasn’t politicians who didn’t support your rights because it was unpopular who secured them for you in the end. It was the courts + public opinion that forced “Dems opposed to gay marriage” to change their position.

Bud they are canceling trans people’s drivers licenses with no notice and using the full force of the federal government to deny them healthcare. This isn’t “offering civil unions but not marriage” it’s a full-on assault on people’s humanity with intent to eradicate.

I just learned that my library card gives me access to the newspaper archives! I’m researching our building and found this headline about the original builder/landlord in the Oct 17, 1914 issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune:

To me they’re more age-gap Bingley/Jane: he’s affable and generous, she’s sensible and kind. Mr John Knightley (Emma’s brother-in-law) is definitely a grumpy, though.

Right, like if Congressman Yoho had called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a cunt on the steps on congress instead of “fucking bitch” he probably would have been expelled.

In Mel Brooks’s memoir he says his strategy when the studio wanted scenes cut was to agree (“It’s gone! It’s out!”) then just leave them in. This scene and the farting campfire scene in Blazing Saddles were both saved this way.

I think she does, because her attempt to wreck Walden’s reputation while providing no evidence for her claims reeks of privilege—and also she feels the need to claim the opposite. She’s playing for sympathy and “I am being oppressed”, so she needs the power imbalance to be inverted & dispelled.
Clip from Rachel Hope Cleve’s letter accusing Waldron of plagiarizing her book: “In the future when people search for “Charity and Sylvia” on the internet the algorithm will point them to Walden, who has a far bigger platform as a cartoonist than I will ever have as an academic.”

The way people assign human motives to AI is so uncomfortable. “It promised,” like there’s another person there with a sense of honor and responsibility to keep a promise. I know they push that by having the AI reply in first person and attribute thoughts to itself, but the casual buying in, ugh.

We got some family suggestions to "space out" the vaccines, so we asked a friend who did it. She said it was constant doctor's appointments for her child's first four years, and every single appointment included a shot. It was burdensome, stressful, and her kid is still afraid of doctors.

Yeah, every time I search now the results are just one site after another repeating the same shallow AI content, phrased differently. Search engines used to penalize inauthentic sites, and now they’re the ones making the tools to churn them out faster.

I don’t disagree, but I think the solution to people accidentally deskilling themselves won’t be to just go with it. All human skills are developed by doing the things, including making errors. AI posits that human error is a problem you can skip over, but it’s not, it’s literally how we learn.

I do the same with the Fitzgerald translation, it's been my favorite since I first read it in college. I'm excited to finally read the Emily Wilson though! (It's been on my wish list since it was published but I finally bought it, realizing the hardcover will probably go OP soon.)

I loved Alexandra Vasti’s latest, Scandal of the Summer. And for Regency with a trans woman protagonist that will wring every emotion from your body and leave you joyfully dead, A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall.

I've always read "the claims to reputation which her marriage had given her" as negative, since it's contrasted with Lydia's more winning qualities. Like, she's still young, lively, and pretty, nobody's ostracizing her, but they also haven't forgotten how her marriage went down. The stain lingers.

I'm not really worried that the backlash to Platner is going to endanger our ability to give folks second chances, because at no point did that man seem like he earnestly felt he was on his second chance. He made it pretty clear at every turn he thought he was still living large on his first one.
