If it works, that's pretty cool; I didn't think
would ever see this implemented (I also didn't
expect LLMs to exist).
However, this is not something you can PR
here, or anywhere. You sent me a nearly 50k
line diff, unasked for, completely LLM built, and
you somehow expect me to review it. There is
SO MUCH unrelated garbage here. Never
minding all of the docs and Python, you've
somehow touched basically all of the upstream
HDL, which already had MSU1 support, so idk
what in the world you're doing.
This kind of behavior is not acceptable. You are
infringing on the time and brainpower of people
by pushing "your" content that little/no of your
brainpower went into; completely unrequested.
I hope for the sake of all responsible
maintainers that you do not do such a thing
again.
Again, I think it's cool that you and your LLM
supposedly got this to work. It has no place in
my world.

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

They got lots of mileage out of the "could not immediately be verified" formula every time a new video from the Gaza genocide got wide circulation, too. I think what they need is a quality news source to clear up all these mysteries they keep wondering about.

That's a sea change. And boy howdy are conservative Catholics handling it poorly. They got soft on winning and don't know how to handle adversity. I know a few who have left altogether for other denominations and I'm like man don't you know what it's like to tough it out?

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 7h
I know the church is nominally apolitical, its doctrines wide ranging and filled with stances to unease people all across the political spectrum, but also: lol don't insult my intelligence. It's an intensely political actor. For half a century it's given succor to the right, now it's antagonistic.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 7h
It's still a live issue, most urgently at Catholic hospitals which continue to be terrible on reproductive health, but the change of the church's public face from antiabortion to anything else is surprising, it's happened at whiplash speed by institutional standards, and is at odds with the GOP.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 7h
It's the kind of too clever by half BS that was nauseating and insincere, it was always obvious that church leadership (especially the UCCB) didn't give a rat's ass about anything else. No one who paid any attention was fooled. Anyway, Roe is gone now so mission accomplished fuckos.
100
Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 7h
For decades after Roe the church's public face was antiabortion. Officially a culture of life, it was only loud about the anniversary of Roe. Free chartered buses to DC for parishioners to mark the anniversary, never to state capitols on the eve of executions.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 7h
Yes, Catholics don't applaud in church, and yes there's been a sea change in the church's public face in the last few years. By public face I mean, what is the church visible about in terms of overall messaging and its activity outside the church.

The latest Rush album wasn't competing with a whole lot tbh. I wonder how that would play out now. Would it be more like you with Evanescence - catch an early album, miss some and not like them as much after catching up, maybe get into a later one? It's unknowable but interesting to think about.
000
Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
And it makes me wonder if I'd love, say, Rush the same way if I was 14 and they were releasing their early albums now. Back then it was just radio, word of mouth, record store clerks and music magazines/buying guides. It was very constricted, so the choices were very limited.

I've got an RSS feed with about 12 different music sites, and I enjoy going through them, reading about what's new, & deciding what songs to put into my queue. I spend probably 5 hours a week doing that, just reading what's out there and putting playlists together. It's enjoyable to me, not a chore.

I'm sure the TV aficionados think people like me are uncultured swine lol. I'm not into it the way I am music though. And I definitely try to get the music casuals in my life turned on to stuff a little off the beaten path. But I think that sort of restless, "OK what's next" outlook is key.
100
Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
People who write articles with titles like "this is your next book to read" are aficionados trying to gently coax casuals into deeper water. With TV I'm a total casual, I'll take the latest season of whatever midlevel show I enjoy like Welcome to Wrexham over the latest hot prestige one.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
Artists I love almost never deliver that for me because of the familiarity. I think that broadly speaking people approach art as casuals or aficionados. Casuals wand the comfortable and familiar, aficionados like digging deeper and are endlessly vexed by the unadventurous tastes of casuals.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
For me, the moment when a new artist clicks - when I've had a few listens and I'm like "oh this is incredible" and my brain lights up like a Roman candle - that's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I'm always looking for the next hit of that.
100
Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
I think for me the thrill of discovery goes a long way. Finding a new artist is such a thrill for me, and once I'm into one listening to their other stuff is more familiar. Unless it is extremely my vibe (prog folk circa 1978, for the record) I'm very unlikely to be into it as much.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 9h
Having slept on it, my revised thoughts are: it's weird. The interaction between artist and audience is so idiosyncratic. For me The Go! Team is another band I caught up with mid-career, and the first album I listened to (The Scene Between) is my favorite and one of their least regarded.

Any time I post about impeachment, I get defeatist replies from people telling me it’s pointless because the Republicans won’t support it. If you decide in advance that you’re going to lose, you will definitely lose. And the value of an impeachment process is not just removing a bad president.

Maybe it's familiarity even with artists that stretch and reinvent themselves. It's still the artist I originally got into, and I always seem to be looking for something new.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 19h
Same with Taylor. I knew about her earlier stuff but didn't much like it. Once I got into her later stuff I still felt that way after revisiting it. It's like for me the clock starts ticking once I like an artist. Early or late once it happens it's like my brain sets an expiration date.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 19h
There are plenty of artists I keep up with as they age but it just doesn't seem to hit the same. That said, artists I don't get into until later don't seem to have that. I didn't listen to Superchunk until I Hate Music and that's still my favorite album, I like it better than their earlier stuff.

Dan Fejes @df1.bsky.social · 19h
I generally enjoy music from younger artists. Almost all my favorite Rush albums are from before they hit 30 or so. Even artists like McMurtry that lean into storytelling and would seem to benefit from age and experience are hit or miss later in their careers for me.

Addendum: This is a very good point! Investigations with no follow through--no consequences--are worthless. That's why I feel treason should be on the table. But as much as I'd love to run through the streets with heads on pikes, that's not justice. Not without investigations first anyway.

With great consistency, people who prefer authoritarianism to democracy envision themselves in charge. Could be them personally, could be vicarious, but they're always the boot, not the face. It's basically a way to say everyone should shut up and accept that we're doing my preferences, not theirs.
