The members of Chumbawamba mostly didn't know how to play instruments at first, and they said that they operated more as a gang than a band. In their early days, Chumbawamba existed in the orbit of Crass, the great UK anarcho-punk collective who inspired entire generations of crusty kids. During my high school punk years, which overlapped with the success of "Tubthumping," the Crass logo was everywhere. It was just as omnipresent as the Misfits' Crimson Skull. I don't see it quite as often anymore, but it's still out there. The first Chumbawamba song ever to be released on vinyl was "Three Years Later," a moody lo-fi freakout that came out on the 1982 Crass Records compilation Bullshit Detector 2. All kinds of extreme UK underground bands were on those Bullshit Detector comps. Amebix were on the first volume. Napalm Death made their debut on the third. That was the context in which Chumbawamba operated.

Chumbawamba started in a Leeds commune in 1982. Three of their members had previously been in a group with the excellent name Chimp Eats Banana. Different band members gave different explanations for the name Chumbawamba, but it's just complete gibberish. The fact that it's both meaningless and fun to say is part of the appeal, and that might've helped "Tubthumping" take off a decade and a half later. American DJs loved sinking their teeth into the name "Chumbawamba" and then making fun of it. My favorite probably-fake story about the name is that the band initially intended to play every show under a completely different name and Chumbawamba is just the one that stuck, which honestly does sound pretty plausible to me.

The thing that you need to know about Chumbawamba is that they operated as a real-deal anarchist collective before, during, and after the time they made an out-of-nowhere bonkers megahit. Chumbawamba weren't just a band with no identifiable frontman. They were a band who remained deeply invested in putting their egalitarian principles to work. They held meetings. They voted on everything, whether to accept a particular live show or to license their freak hit to some corporation or other. They shared equal co-writing and co-production credit on all their records. They paid their road crew the same as all the band members. They walked the walk.

The Alternative Number Ones: Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” stereogum.com/2512908/the-...
If you couldn't already tell, I have been waiting for this one. Ridiculous song, ridiculous band, ridiculous story, and I say all of those things in only the most appreciative tone. The mere idea that Chumbawamba had the chance to make an eternal global smash is deeply unlikely on every conceivable level. The fact that they did do that feels like proof that some mysterious deity both exists and has a sense of humor. It's absurdity piled on top of absurdity, and it doesn't even have one of typical Alternative Number Ones endings where everyone dies of heroin overdoses or the band members all sue each other into oblivion. At the very height of their brief fame, Chumbawamba knew that this would be a fleeting moment in their lives. They made the most of it.

Ta-Nehisi Coates from 2012. (N-words in alt text asterisked by me.) www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
I frequently reference the story of George Wallace's evolution. Wallace was once a sensible politician who generally was seen as fair-minded by black leaders in Alabama. But he lost the gubernatorial election after being tarred by John Patterson as too friendly to black people. Wallace subsequently vowed to never be "out-n*****ed" again and thus began his long dark march into history.

[quote]

You know, I tried to talk about good roads and good schools and all these things that have been part of my career, and nobody listened. And then I began talking about n*****s, and they stomped the floor.

[end quote]

What is vexing about Wallace's story is not simply that did he know he was wrong, the man who initially "out-n*****ed" him, John Patterson, knew that his stance was wrong too. In 2009, Patterson endorsed Barack Obama, saying the following of his past:

[quote]

As governor, his administration was considered progressive. But in both offices, he was the state's leading defender of segregation and paved the way for the segregation policies of George Wallace.

"When I became governor, there were 14 of us running for governor that time and all 14 of us were outspoken for segregation in the public schools," Patterson said. "And if you had been perceived not to have been strong for that, you would not have won.

"I regret that, but there was not anything I could do about it but to live with it."

[end quote]

We imagine the American past as filled with rabid bigots. But there have always been at least as many people who have some sense that bigotry is wrong, though they may say nothing. And then there are a select few who are fairly clear on right and wrong, but simply see more upside in being wrong.I frequently reference the story of George Wallace's evolution. It's a straight line from the original Birchers' "fluoridated water is a communist plot" stuff to this, no? And it has supplied the primordial energy that the conservative movement runs on for decades. futurism.com/artificial-i...
In a Facebook group called “Urine Therapy, your sacred plasma medicine,” which has over 45,000 members, some discovered that popular AI chatbots initially push back on wild notions of tinkle as medicine.

“Have you come across any AI tool that is positive about urine therapy and explains it in detail?” one frustrated user asked. “I haven’t found a single one so far.”

But despite some initial hurdles, acolytes of the urine drinking lifestyle have found it remarkably easy to break through chatbot safeguards — engineering AI to say whatever it is they wanted to hear to begin with, essentially. The bypass, it seems, involves simply mentioning the word “esoteric.”

Because my brain hangs onto the strangest things: archive.org/details/mad-...
Cartoon from MAD Magazine #214 (April 1980). "The Jogger," done in the meter of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven." Cartoon of an older looking man in a sweatshirt and headband, grimacing and with sweat flying off him, with a somewhat confused/concerned person in the background. Text:

Then it was that I did see there just how old he seemed to be there;
Ancient was his weathered face with wrinkles I could not ignore;
Years of running so insanely made him look much older, plainly,
Than his age, which I felt mainly must be fifty-five or more;
"What's your age?" I asked, expecting he'd say fifty-five or more;
Quoth the Jogger, "Twenty-four."

Anyway: 1. Foreign influence operations exist and nations use them because they do indeed have an impact, but only at the margins. They can't make a whole nation act against its interest or overturn its values, those conditions are overwhelmingly domestic creations.
Excerpt from Lincoln's Lyceum address, January 27, 1838

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer: If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.

Excellent juxtaposition on the timeline. UK PM fretting about how the Russians are poisoning the minds of the British working class right after an article about how Danny Tommo attacked a migrant boat with a knife. Is his demo susceptible to online influence as well? If so who's doing it?

I'm not sure that hiring a bunch of white collar "disinfo experts" is going to convince Britain's poor, uneducated, and unemployed that the Russians are lying to them about their useless elites, but, by Jove, it's an idea, isn't it.

Second picture shows highlighted text:

In eye-catching remarks, the prime minister suggested that Britons who were struggling with the cost of living and young people not in education, training or employment may be particularly susceptible to foreign influence online, underlining how inequality further undermined society.

This is wild. After not being able to confirm his whereabouts in the initial story (!!!!!), they treat the absence of evidence as a reason to double down, not retract!
Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for the Times, told me that the company did make diligent efforts to correct the record during those two and a half months: “After receiving denials, Mr. Witz immediately sought to confirm Mr. Spears’s whereabouts and reexamine his own reporting, reaching out to multiple sources including the university and Spears’s representatives. No one was willing to provide an alibi or other information to support the denials, leaving the Times unable to confirm a correction was needed.”

Just heard a clip of this used in a Volkswagen commercial, looks like I'm about to go down a rabbit hole. m.youtube.com/watch?v=7bCI... (VW used Pink Moon by Nick Drake in a 1999 commercial and basically introduced him to a wide audience for the first time. A quarter century after his death.)
Originally released in 1978 on the small Puddlebrook label, The Kids Are OK! is a rare UK folk-rock album by Bob Hughes, following his earlier work with Maggies Farm, his solo album My Old Man, and the Hooknorton project In For A Penny.... Recorded quickly at Spaceward Studios, the album expands Hughes’ acoustic roots into a fuller band sound while keeping a strong focus on melody and songwriting.

Long out of print and never officially reissued, the record has remained largely unknown outside collector circles. This reissue restores an overlooked independent release, capturing a transitional moment in late-1970s British folk and singer-songwriter music. It fits the kind of "real people" private-press discovery often championed by collector and archivist Paul Major.
