Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.
There are two photos taped together. The top shows a brown stone building with a brown thatched roof. It's surrounded by green grass, stone walkways, and blue-gray sea. Below is a checked brown tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The one at te top shows a rocky hillside with green and straw-colored grass, gray rocks, and a tan sandy beach below. The blue waters are crashing at the shore. Below is a green herringbone tweed that reflects the colors in the landscape above it. There are two photos taped together. The top shows a field of green and straw colored fields with bits of purple flowers. Below is a a series of checked brown tweed that reflect the colors in the landscape above it. A swatch book of solid-colored tweeds. The green tweed has visible flecks of red, gold, and blue.

I think it's pretty neat that one of the legit breakout indie success stories this year is a game about painstakingly designing and sewing opulent ballgowns store.steampowered.com/app/4019220/...

From the makers of King of Dragon Pass and Six Ages comes something completely new. From what I can gather, it’s a single player narrative party RPG that is like playing a constantly changing tabletop campaign.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

A lot of these types of questions have, of course, been answered already by programmers and designers smarter than myself. Rogue is 46 years already! But in order to find out what I want out of my game, I shouldn't simply copy existing games.

It's kinda fun designing a traditional tile-based, turn-progressed roguelike game if you start the design from first principles. You have to actually answer questions like "does closing a door kill a creature on contact" or "what is a wall, actually" #gamedev

Looking back on it, it is remarkable that UO doesn’t have any* survival mechanics attached to it. A player wants a house because having a house is cool. It presents gameplay value (stash) and a creative outlet via furnishing. * avoiding getting PK’d is true survival in itself!

I think this thread checks out, because growing up through the 90s recession meant that my blue collar parents had to choose what bills to pay to keep us kids fed. And while my parents never questioned the time I spent playing video games, it did leave this sense of having to Value my time spent.

Why has Japan been relatively insulated from the global games industry crisis? Japanese industry consultant @serkantoto.bsky.social, expat developer @liambme.bsky.social, and a Japanese game studies professor tell us about protection laws, domestic bias, slow-growth mindsets and the cost of living.

Watching this, it reminds me of being a kid at the time, imagining how magical playing the game must be. I am tempted to give the server Majuular played for this video a try, but I know I just don’t have the time to dedicate to it. A shame.

There was (still is?) a time in games where procgen was treated as this one-fits-all solution, of coming up with games with endless replayability. But in the end, I think players appreciate hand crafted solutions more, even if procgen is used in the process.
000
devil devito @devil.zone · 24/09/2026
Especially relevant to me is the notion of the current trend of AI use being throwing more resources than necessary to brute force a solution. I am so much more interested in design that expands from limited resources, be it pure game design or technical problems like procgen.

Great read ln why the research on AI* is still inherently interesting, especially from game designer’s point of view. * No, not that kind of AI.

we were once approached by a company that wanted to buy inkle and i couldn't understand *why*: our back catalogue isn't especially valuable and our future projects aren't likely to be either. They explained quite cheerfully the following points:

Yeah, Breath of Fire 3 still kicks ass. I had forgotten how much character there is in the spritework and animations. Like kid Ryu as a concept being a clumsy doofus or the party getting dunked in water and shaking themselves dry.

The only downside is that being an Android device, there’s a ton of manual configuration involved. I spent the last two weeks setting up, then realizing something had broke because suddenly none of my Sony console games worked.

I can vouch it being perfect for pre-PS3 emulation. There’s enough power to run even Switch games (esp. with 12GB). Funnily enough there’s patches to run modern games like BOTW in 4:3 format just to fit this thing.

I am also considering trying out a n isometric perspective for my game, instead of a first person crawling. It seems I can use the same base for either option.

I realize a tile and turn based roguelike is a solved problem, which means ready-to-use engines and tools already exist but I am also doing this to learn.

Jaadugar is my anime highlight of 2026 summer season. Beautiful animation combined with direction that allows the atmosphere and its inhabitants to breathe. What a fascinating subject as well. I am always in for historical anime but both muslim and mongol cultures are rarely handled in pop media.

I don’t think it’s just the times we’re living in that inspires these games. To me, this aesthetic is connected to the mid 90s with the likes of Quake and other gritty, early 3D accelerated PC games. It has this worn and alienating feeling to it.

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind
