Then it should be used very specifically for specific jobs, with strict guardrails, and not propping up our entire economy, and being forced into everything. The same way I don’t need to know how to use, say, software for dental offices, or a forklift, most people don’t need AI.

NYT has gained monopoly power in the American liberal economy. With no comparable competition, they can say “fine, good luck elsewhere” to nearly any person, idea, or story they want US liberalism’s ideas became more based in what NYT wants, not which ideas are strongest or best. Monopoly power!

Back when you could credibly threaten to go to WaPo instead, NYT had to obey forces besides their own preferences. Same way Coke couldn’t raise prices too much because you might drink Pepsi. Now NYT can just say “we hate Mamdani and will publish accordingly. Good luck on your substack.”

Bunch of datapoints suggesting PBJ's thesis is 🎯🎯🎯 here. This shift isn't showing up in Dem ad strategy yet. (except for ours ofc) But even Third Way is suggesting a stronger approach to defending basic rights. Very important that this shift is under way already going into the '28 cycle.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Yes, it’s a habit /superstition of the party, as a cultural entity in and of itself. It’s a bizarre way to think about a political party but this does seem plausible. It’s a ‘sacrifice the virgin for the crop yield’ kind of belief and it’s really hard to displace.

This is actually empirically true but you cannot convince decision makers in the Dem party of it. It’s very mysterious as to why. I don’t even mean that sarcastically. I literally do not understand & have no plausible explanations.

Their decision rule had changed BEFORE the underlying prejudicial attitude was fully attenuated. That’s how persuasion works. And it’s fully a matter of making the case. We think hearts change first but our hearts are messy, our minds give us an out when we start to feel conflicted.

Deva Woodly @devawo.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
This happened with marriage equality. There’s a moment in the public opinion polling in 2015 where you see slight majorities both reporting that they disapprove of same sex sexual relationships AND supporting marriage equality as a policy.
1222
Deva Woodly @devawo.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That’s why public opinion is up for grabs. Our arguments don’t change people’s underlying attitudes or values (or if they do it’s very slow) but they do help people chose a different underlying value as the decision rule.
1357
Deva Woodly @devawo.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
A lot of people have both xenophobic attitudes AND believe that you should love your neighbor, which one of those underlying attitudes is primed and salient depends on how it’s being talked about by people you trust & things you here in public discourse.
38411
Deva Woodly @devawo.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Really, it changes people decision rule for which policy they prefer. Underlying attitudes don’t change very fast, but we usually have *competing underlying attitudes* so the arguments that are made in public help us chose which attitude will help us make the policy/candidate decision.

A platform displaying the data on US protests from the Crowd Counting Consortium. It includes a map of the US with counts of protest events in circular form overlaying the protests' locations. It also includes weekly tallies of protest events and participations, top protest issues, and various filters allowing users to explore events by location, issue, date, political valence, etc. The top of the image shows a total of 61,782 protests with 14,684,201 participants across 55 US states and territories from January 20, 2025 to May 31, 2026.
