I mean it’s a subtle tongue. If you search up “styling 2015/2025” you get a bunch of images like this.
Same woman wearing a white shirt and jeans under two headings. One says 2015 and the white shirt and jeans are more fitted. One says 2024 and the white shirt and jeans are slightly boxier.

Please bring strange things.
Please come bringing new things.
Let very old things come into your hands.
Let what you do not know come into your eyes.
Let desert sand harden your feet.
Let the arch of your feet be the mountains.
Let the paths of your fingertips be your maps
And the ways you go be the lines of your palms.
Let there be deep snow in your inbreathing
And your outbreath be the shining of ice.
May your mouth contain the shapes of strange words.
May you smell food cooking you have not eaten.
May the spring of a foreign river be your navel.
May your soul be at home where there are no houses.
Walk carefully, well-loved one,
Walk mindfully, well-loved one,
Walk fearlessly, well-loved one.
Return with us, return to us,
Be always coming home.

So excited to have this article finally out! “Democratic Organizing and Political Change: Toward a Research Agenda” written with my terrific colleagues Daniel Galvin, Ray Block Jr., and @hahrie.bsky.social www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi...
“Democracy depends on people having the capacity to act collectively and navigate difference, yet political science often overlooks the transformative work that enables this. This essay foregrounds democratic organizing: sustained, relational, and strategic work that transforms people – reshaping their identities, relationships, and sense of what is possible – while building the collective capacity needed to act together across difference and inequality. Distinct from mobilizing, it does so through sustained relational investment rather than episodic activation. Drawing on U.S. and global examples, we present a conceptual framework built around three analytically distinct principles: interdependence as the proper ontological unit of analysis, power with as the mode of collective capacity-building organizing produces, and the politics of possibility as an orientation toward democratic futurity that keeps people engaged when outcomes are uncertain. We situate these principles within existing scholarship on collective action and civic engagement, extending that literature to address what it has systematically overlooked. We then outline a concrete research agenda for studying organizing as a central engine of democratic development.”

Very excited to share my latest article Meditations on a Politics of Futurity: A Black Feminist Repertoire muse.jhu.edu/article/993494
Article abstract screenshot: “Meditations on a Politics of Futurity” published in the journal Theory and Event. Text reads: This essay includes a political repertoire for thought and action rooted in Black feminism that I call a politics of futurity. It consists of four parts: purpose, strategy, tactics, and goal. The first builds on the politics of care that I developed in Reckoning. The second adapts and extends Saidiya Hartman's method of critical fabulation augmented by a notion of political fabrication. The third suggests tactics derived from the folkloric character of the Trickster. And the fourth forwards the goal of democratic redesign and reconstruction, which we can think of as worldbuilding.

There’s an old joke about someone who walks into a doctors office, contorts themselves into a strange shape and says “doc, it really hurts when I do that.” And the doctor says, “don’t do that.”
Ezra Klein article on AI: My experience of Anthropic’s Claude in recent months is that I’ll drop in a stub of a thought and immediately receive paragraphs of often elegant writing turning that intuition into something that looks, superficially, like a fully realized idea. It’s my impulse, but it has been recast and extended into something far more coherent. With each passing month, I have to expend more energy to recognize whether it’s fundamentally wrong or hollow.

The pressure of losing that Christmas money in the economy eded the Government Shutdown. Be not deceived.

Walmart gets plenty of food stamp money, & airlines get what’s left. They saw the losses in holiday air & interstate travel across so many industries from oil to food to all the retail in between.

It only works if everybody keeps consuming. It all falls apart because the wealthy don’t spend they only profit from convincing us to do so at every turn.

So no, those democrats who conceded ain’t exactly getting nothing they just didn’t get it for the people, they got it as a win for the cascaded suffering of businesses in their districts (and some in their pockets too). That’s the real trickle down economics. There’s a benefit but you won’t hardly feel it on its fall from the mountain tops.

Honestly, this is why we need a qualitative data lab. People are dunking on these folks or calling them stupid but they are *reasoning about politics* and in similar ways, it’s just really difficult to decipher & we don’t have the long form interview data at scale that we would need to get insight.

I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.

Interesting study of longitudinal data from the UK showing bright lower income kids fall behind in adolescence (not early childhood).
High-achieving children from low-income families have perhaps the best opportunity to break through the glass ceiling and achieve upwards social mobility.
Yet there have been relatively few studies investigating how key outcomes for this group develop throughout childhood, and how this compares to their equally able but more socio-economically advantaged peers. This paper draws upon Millenium Cohort Study data from the UK to provide new evidence on this issue. We find that the cognitive skills of bright 5-year-olds from low-income families keep pace with those of children from high-income families through to the end of primary school.
However, the transition into secondary is a critical period, with high-achieving children from poor families experiencing a particularly sharp relative decline in their attitudes towards school, behaviour, mental health and academic achievement between age 11 and 14. The failure to fully capitalise on the early potential of this group is likely to be a key reason why the UK is failing to become a more socially fluid society.

Meditations in an emergency by Cameron Awkward-Rich
I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There’s a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart.

I’m a social scientist but I always get obsessed w/ poetry when I start writing a book. So here’s something apt that I encountered today. Maybe it’ll resonate with you, too.
Incantation of the First Order by Rita Dove

Listen, no one signed up for this lullaby.
No bleeped sheep or rosebuds or twitching stars
will diminish the fear or save you from waking

into the same day you dreamed of leaving—
mockingbird on back order, morning bells
stuck on snooze—so you might as well

get up and at it, pestilence be damned.
Peril and risk having become relative,
I’ll try to couch this in positive terms:

Never! is the word of last resorts,
Always! the fanatic’s rallying cry.
To those inclined toward kindness, I say

Come out of your houses drumming. All others,
beware: I have discarded my smile but not my teeth.
