New story day, and it's a short one! “Ivan Ivanovich” is about spacecraft dummies & the illusion of safety & an adriftness that makes you feel far from your own self. Based on a real Soviet test flight mannequin from the '60s. In @othersidespec.bsky.social! 🧑🏼‍🚀 othersidespec.com/pieces/ivan-ivanovich
The cover of Otherside, issue 3. In shades of orange to yellow against a black background, a figure looks toward a grand stone structure with columns, a staircase, and two giant statues. There are leaning trees and what looks like wind or smoke. The issue is dated September 2026 and the contributors' names are listed in white at the bottom.A screengrab of the Otherside page hosting my short story, "Ivan Ivanovich." Otherside's illustrative purple banner is at the top, followed by the story's word count (1500 words) and the first three paragraphs of text.A photograph of the Ivan Ivanovich display at the National Air and Space Museum, sourced from Wikipedia. The mannequin is in the foreground wearing a helmet and orange flight suit.

Purple/blue background with white text and the cover of P.A. Cornell’s collection on the left side. Cover depicts an astronaut lying in a field of purple flowers under a pink/purple sky. Top text reads: From Nebula Finalist P.A. Cornell. Quote next to book cover reads: "An ambitious debut collection, with stories that are at times joyous, at times horrific, yet always satisfying. Cornell will make you nostalgic for the past and wary of the future, but most importantly, without fail, she'll remind you of the enduring power of humanity." - Derrick Boden, Sturgeon Award Finalist. Cold Iron Clockwork

By then, nearly every faerie in the dell made use of Alastair’s inventions, had even
conscripted him to fashion machines that would aid in their tiresome reprieves - pluck their harps, finger their pipes, braid their hair. Even this had left them unsatisfied, though he could not reduce their burden of impetus any further—not without replacing their muscles with cables, their: joints with cogs.
