Flying out of Boston this evening to go back to Tanzania! It's quite a convoluted itinerary. I'll fly to Dubai, then after a 12 hour layover, fly to Kenya, to Dr es Salaam in Tanzania, then finally to Moshi

One thing the 90s got right was how horrific it is to answer email
ad or article from the 90s with guy at desk having a real one with electronic mail trying to kill him

in white letters it says "what the heck is Electronic Mail?"

It seems like that goes against the rules of the mystery genre. We are supposed to only have the facts that the detectives have. I like the Father Dowling books, but several times the villain is revealed early in the story in a cut scene. This seems to spoil the rest of the book.

I think it's because the flashbacks are short—usually less than 30 seconds. But they do fill in holes in the plot, so as a viewer, you start to solve the mystery before the characters do.

I usually hate flashbacks in TV shows. They feel like they interrupt the flow of the story and place too much emphasis one or two past events that shaped the characters. But I'm watching Broadchurch series two and am liking how they use flashbacks.

Shopping on Amazon for a phone case. You can filter for anything but phone model—which is the most important detail! Searching for Samsung case and getting results for iPhone! We are nowhere near the computers taking over the world. Or if they do, we are all in trouble.

And I do mean more than size and spacing. It's not just getting things to line up perfectly (that is hardly ever possible with user editable content), but I mean components that work well together in general.

I think WP has done a great job showing how this can be done with the Twenty Twenty Three theme, which takes advantage of Full Site Editing.

Our components in a design system need to be thoughtfully compatible with the other blocks. This won't happen magically. We will have to take care to spacing and sizing to find this consistency.
100
Matt Derocher @derocher.me · 08/07/2023
But the blocks that they do mold are thoughtful and follow a system. They have connectors that always line up with other blocks. Poles always are the same diameter so they can be held by a minifigure hand or stuck in a clip.

Matt Derocher @derocher.me · 08/07/2023
But the real Lego blocks have shown us that it us possible to create unique things with the same base blocks. They hardly ever introduce a new molded piece. But find unique uses for the blocks they already have molded.

Matt Derocher @derocher.me · 08/07/2023
It's hard to do a real system that is built with only Lego blocks. Most design systems have one-off mega components. This is mostly because designers want to start from scratch each time and add customizations to each block.

WordPress Full Site Editing looks extremely promising. There have been site editor plugins for years, but none of them were enjoyable to use. There are definitely a bunch of questions to answer and kinks to work out, but it's very exciting!
