Well, here's my screening list for my honours/MA-level seminar called "Hollywood's Great Depression"

Show me the cover of an album that, to you, is so good, so perfect, you can’t even believe it was made by mortal humans on earth. (I am leaning into the "can't believe humans made this" part of the prompt) (Also the OP's choice is a gorgeous AF album)

IDEA: rehabilitation centers for the modern, digitally ravaged attention span They could feature activities like lectures, seminar-style discussions, and reading. They could be called colleges, or maybe universities.

I know the point of lists like there are to goad people into debating the rankings and exclusions, so I should refuse to take the bait, but... where is *The Righteous Gemstones*?

I love it when insert shots of newspapers tell huge hunks of story that would be too expensive/complicated to film. Also when they narrate the emergence of the multitude, decades before Virno or Hardt and Negri. [from *Wild Boys of the Road* (William Wellman, 1933)]

I am re-watching Capra's *American Madness* (1932) to prep for a seminar, and is there another long take like this in all of 1930s Hollywood?

I'm going to try and be as polite as possible about this: this isn't a purity test, this is a "will you defend a minority group when the government is working hard to murder them" question, and acting like it's a wedge issue rather than the entire game is a failure of empathy and historical vision.

Finally got a chance to watch Maren Ade's brilliant *Everyone Else*, and jesus, there just isn't another filmmaker like her. Her characters are breathtakingly alive, doing things that completely surprise you yet make total sense on reflection.

Just taught my first class of the academic year, and I don't know why I was nervous beforehand: it's just like riding a bike! In that I sweat a ton and feel completely exhausted afterwards.

Not to beat up on Douthat even more, but I'll just say: it has never, in all of post-war American history, been more crystal clear exactly who your enemy should be. Never. If it's not obvious to you, you are morally & intellectually defective.

One of the great things about 80s Hollywood movies is that many of them have a scene where one character eats sushi and another character loses their mind--"holy shit, what is that, dude? Is that even food?"--and the viewer is supposed to agree with the guy losing his shit.

My college-aged daughter was having trouble assembling a piece of IKEA furniture, and I was able to diagnose where she had put one piece in backwards, which meant I had to partially disassemble it and then put it back together correctly, and is there any greater pleasure for a middle-aged dad?

Enjoy this article from a Minnesota newspaper in 1882 noting that Scandinavians love their home countries so much that it will take them generations to assimilate into America. www.loc.gov/resource/sn8...
SCANDINAVIANS
No people on earth, probably excel the Scandinavians, and scarcely any equal them, unless it may be the Swiss mountaineers, in attachment to their native country. The Scandinavian emigrant
brings with him to this country, not only his love of home, but his attachments to customs and habits of his old home. So
strong is this passion that it is hard for him to assimilate to the customs of his new home, and to conform to the ideas of American citizenship, but he remains in his adopted land, a foreigner, in all that pertains to his modes, manners, habits,
likes and dislikes. This peculiar habit of our Scandinavian fellow citizens, and this strong, over-mastering attachment to their native land, has not been generally known and appreciated by our own citizens, "to the manor born."
It will take several generations to wear away this foster land attachment, and to assimilate the Scandinavian emigrant, and
absorb him into the language, habits, customs and true idea of a homogeneous American citizenship.

As a matter of pure basketball, I am rooting for the Spurs, but it is increasingly clear that, with their ability to absorb & then reverse Tr*mp's bad vibes, the Knicks are representatives of the world-spirit & the Spurs are unfortunate bystanders in the dialectical unfolding of historical necessity
