There are other options: the FTC, states, civil lawsuits and legislative updates from Congress, but none are easy or ideal. If you've asked yourself "Why can't they just use [XYZ] approach to prosecute or regulate agentic hacks?" spend a few minutes of your Friday digging into this one.

Believe it or not, these hacks appear to exist in a sort of legal black hole. Many of the people I spoke to said the details of incidents like the HuggingFace hack make them poor fits for criminal hacking charges under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act or other federal laws.

The legacy of DOGE: when a powerful org wants to break a lot of laws or cross moral lines, they need to put young, overly confident but ultimately ignorant teenagers in positions of power to do it, because older people are generally wiser about being made obvious puppets and fallguys.

The 2020 election has been relentlessly studied by our most experienced experts and by our most craven partisan hacks for 6y now, and every examination has wound up demonstrating the integrity of Biden’s victory in that election and the malignity of Trump’s obsession with undermining it.

I once left a job bc I felt they weren't serious about investing in journalism and were headed toward irrelevance. Just left. No job lined up. I knew I'd find a better org that reflected my values. Maybe I'd be wrong (spoiler: i wasn't) but at least I'd have my dignity. This is genocide.

You can just resign. Nobody is making you work for the President of the United States while he facilitates an overseas genocide. Nobody can make you work anywhere, actually. That's a choice you're making, and it's far from the only sin these guys are accused of in this story.

IMO it's very much sinking in right now in AI world that they are in for a world of hurt and backlash next Congress. How else do you get OpenAI not even bothering to notify the Australian government about this stuff in a timely fashion. The incident happened three months ago!

Lesson #3 that OpenAI's security team learned - in *Summer 2026* - is that having a variety of outside tools to monitor agent behavior and enforce security policy is important. These are all things that apply to every other industry and sector on the planet. They're hard but not unsolvable.

Still thinking about this account (confirmed by other reporters, but not me, as a current OpenAI security employee) that is titled "It's not just about the fucking sandbox" and then literally cites as their first lessons learned a bunch of stuff that amounts to "build a better sandbox."

Yeah, this is happening more and more in a political world where no one feels they can achieve an actual electoral mandate. Biden's people viewed the 2022 midterms as a total validation of their OWN competence - something that turned out to be wildly absurd and incorrect.
