Fertility stats are conventionally denominated in births per *woman* - as if men have no agency. @cdudel.bsky.social & @demomapper.bsky.social hold men responsible by calculating trends in male fertility by age. Check out their male fertility collection on demoscapes: demoscapes.org/collections/...

So I've seen #rstats people rave about DuckDB and Parquet but haven't really had a chance to see what it does—until today! I came across a 2.5 GB Stata file that {haven} couldn't open, so I used Python to convert it to Parquet, then read it into R! File is now only 200 MB and R memory usage is tiny!
R code for doing this:

library(reticulate)
use_python("/opt/homebrew/bin/python3", required = TRUE)

# Create and work with a virtual environment
virtualenv_create("stata-time", python = "/opt/homebrew/bin/python3")
py_install("pandas", envname = "stata-time")
py_install("fastparquet", envname = "stata-time")
use_virtualenv("stata-time", required = TRUE)

py_run_string("
import pandas as pd
data = pd.io.stata.read_stata('name_of_massive_file.dta')
data.to_parquet('name_of_massive_file.parquet')
")

library(tidyverse)
library(duckdb)

# Open an in-memory database connection
con <- dbConnect(duckdb::duckdb())

smaller_data <- tbl_file(con, 'name_of_massive_file.parquet') |>
  select(just, some, of, the, columns, or, whatever) |>
  collect()Screenshot from Finder showing two files, one multiple GBs, the other 200ish MBs
