My personal and professional advice to those in, near, and even (in some cases) outside of known flood zones is to seriously consider obtaining flood insurance this year, since standard policies usually exclude flooding from storms or oceanic inundation.

Why this very strong El Niño year might be a good time to buy flood insurance in California
The anticipated very strong to historically strong El Niño event will likely increase the odds of a very wet winter California, as well as raise sea levels at the coast and in within inland bays and estuaries. As a result, there will likely be an increased risk of flooding in California during winte

NOAA hurricane hunters flying aboard a P-3 Orion aircraft ("Kermit") are monitoring Hurricane Melissa as most aircraft steer clear. The storm poses a catastrophic threat to Jamaica and Haiti. The crew are among the many federal workers working without pay during the US government shutdown.
A map image from the Flight Radar 24 service shows the flight track of a NOAA P-3 Orion aircraft flying over the Caribbean Sea, where Hurricane Melissa threatens to bring catastrophic rain and flooding to Jamaica and Haiti. Most other aircraft appear to be steering clear of the area.

If every candidate is meant to run on their own "heterodox" positions, praised for running against the party agenda, then there is no party agenda against which to run. Also, there's no overarching story to tell - and barriers to low info, votes based on brand, voters to reach.

This is exactly the point @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social and I have been making. The Democratic Party's problem isn't too much turnout, it's too little. The path forward isn't chasing the center, but mobilizing the base and disaffected voters with compelling candidates who stand for something.
Summary of key takeaways about “Biden skippers”—voters who supported Biden in 2020 but sat out 2024. Findings include that they are largely winnable, favor Democrats (+40%), want a strong economic populist message, and are highly motivated by healthcare. Many skipped voting due to economic disaffection, not liberalism. They want Democrats to be fighters, not appeasers.

Fascinating survey data on the missing Biden voters by Lake Research. The voters who sat out in '24 weren't looking for a centrist or turned off by trans rights. They want a genuine economic populist agenda: take on corporate greed, lower costs, and make the wealthy pay their fair share.
Bar chart titled “Motivating Issues” showing how different Democratic policy priorities motivate voters to support Democrats in the 2026 elections. Top issues include affordable health insurance (62% very motivated), tax enforcement on wealthy cheats (62%), preventing tax hikes on working families (60%), and lowering prices by stopping price gouging (60%). Bars are color-coded by intensity: very, somewhat, not too, and not at all motivated.
Bar chart showing reasons Biden skippers cited for not voting in 2024. The top reason (16%) was that Kamala Harris lacked a strong plan to lower the cost of living, closely followed (15%) by concerns she didn’t address poverty and inequality. Other reasons include weak leadership, courting Republicans, and stances on Gaza, immigration, guns, and transgender rights. A note highlights that Republicans, Latinas, and middle-aged voters were most likely to cite these concerns.
