Session #1 was all about change - novel diets in wild house mice, the impact of heatwaves on behav differences in woodlice, & how cities are changing the social lives of animals! Top presentations by our speakers Ekaterina Gorshkova, @urban-squirrel.bsky.social and @averymaune.bsky.social! #DZG2026

Our shiny new study shows birds love wing-shandy as much as the next animal – even more so in the wild than in captivity! 💦🦜🦆🐦‍⬛🦃💦 Yet another nail in the coffin for the tired idea that animals only have sex to procreate. Our piece for The Conversation here: theconversation.com/birds-mastur...

1/9 I came across this paper published in #BiologyLetters @royalsociety.org by @averymaune.bsky.social and her collaborators, while working on a university project. It is about social structure in urban lizards and how cities seem to shape interaction amongst individuals. doi.org/10.1098/rsbl...

New paper out now in @jexpbiol.bsky.social! Led by star PhD student @miaryras.bsky.social, we tested the effects of winter warming (a constant increase as well as fluctuating temps - see pic) on common wall lizard behaviour and physiology. journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...
Diagram showing experimental design of an overwintering temperature assay in lizards. We implemented a cool winter, a warm winter, and a treatment where the temp fluctuated between these two.
