My husband and his friends realised they thought they were good guys but still made like, ironic-sexist jokes. They introduced the 'sexism snake' where wherever one of them made a sexist comment or joke, the others would just start hissing. Didn't need to get into an argument about it, just hissing.

this is a screenshot of a post I made on Comic Fury on a thread about Tapas closing down, and I kind of want to echo this thought here. My point being, that webcomics ≠ webtoon. Comparing the two is like comparing sourdough bread to croissant; they have similar ingredients, but have completely

I find it fascinating how Webtoons changed the webcomic landscape enough to make it seem like webcomics are profitable, which is something that was completely unthinkable like 20 years ago.

It's also the fact that webtoons (as a format, not the company) first started out in Korea, and they have a completely different culture when it comes to self published comics. So much that in my opinion, webcomic and webtoon are two completely different terms.

Webtoons were always considered professional, like something you could reasonably make a living from, kind of like doujinshi in Japan. Meanwhile, western webcomics started out as "2 guys playing video games," and it kind of maintained this amateur DIY culture until recently.

And even when a webcomic gains enough of a following to be profitable, it's still pretty impossible to make a living from them unless you print them. (Or rely on an external service like Patreon)

So Kakao Entertainment committed a pretty big mistake into trying to break into the western market under the assumption that it was going to function the same as a Korean webtoon market. But western webcomics are almost always unprofitable hobby projects, by their very nature.
