I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get a chance to find out how smart he was, because he played the ultimate wally card just after leaving the blocks. (Love a mixed metaphor, me.)

Hey folks. In total honesty my tour is NOT selling well. I’ve sold 30 tickets in a 400 seater in Birmingham, and not much more elsewhere. If you like musical comedy, if you like standup, then please come see my show! And spread the word! The Rachel Parris Songbook tour starts in Nov! Link in bio! 🎶

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Shame on you Ollie Pope, Luke Wood, Moeen Ali, Reece Topley, James Vince, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Laurie Evans for caring more about the money in your own pockets than the human rights of women and girls. This was a personal choice by you, and you chose wrong.

You have *got* to be kidding me? The cost of living is an acute problem for SO many and absolutely needs attention, but is this really the best we can do in the midst of a climate crisis? Tax the rich just a tiny bit more! - it’s not hard. Try it! Reconsidering my #LibDem membership on many levels.

Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.

There is an increasing amount of shared space for bikes and pedestrians - which works great if everyone is respectful and aware! I am v v aware of my responsibility (as is now in the Highway Code too) towards the more vulnerable party. Not everyone is, alas - whether driver or cyclist.

Katy Cooper @decsop1.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
”😅” indeed! I meant that most drivers are now more aware of cyclists and will be more prepared to give space. A small percentage are idiots (and a smaller % are borderline homicidal!) but generally drivers are not actually out to get us… or so I try to remind myself.

Katy Cooper @decsop1.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
It will be much more that drivers are more prepared to expect cyclists and act accordingly 😊 Even in London, things have improved hugely on that front over the last 20 years or so (the time I’ve been cycling here). But London and the rest of the UK are very different!

My lovely academic mum recently downsized her home dramatically and, with *much* regret, had to get rid of many of her 1000s of books, which she donated. But she went through them and if any were inscribed she carefully tore out the page - because she is a thoughtful, kind person.
