Venice used to have a second church on Piazza San Marco: S. Geminiano designed by Sansovino you can see in this Canaletto painting. It was kind of a big deal; shows up in a ton of artwork. It was destroyed by Napoleon — to build a ballroom. Napoleon occupied Venice 1806-1814, eight years.
Painting view of Piazza San Marco showing corner of Loggetta and facing away from Basilica San Marco towards church of San Geminiano with white stone facade, classicizing. Aerial shot of Piazza San Marco showing facade of the now Museo Correr, Napoleonic ballroom. Photograph interior of ballroom, cream colored, ceiling paintings, stone floor, empty and lifeless just like Napoleon
