The realization we had in the field years ago was that it was less important to have deep knowledge about one specific subject than it was to know how to organize, maintain, collect, conserve, and provide access to that subject material.

Cover reveal! The keywords I sent the press were “historical,” “natural,” and “multimedia” and I’d say they nailed it. Featuring my (book’s) main man Humphry Repton on the left there. Coming from Yale University Press this fall.
Image of a book cover with the title The Book of Improvement, subtitle Media Landscapes in the Global Enlightenment, and author Rachael King. The cover features a tree in the center with two men with surveying equipment to the left of the trunk and two men reclining under an umbrella to the right of the trunk. There are a river and rolling hills in the background.

There’s a Rocque London map (1746) for sale. WITH THE 8 SHEET DETAIL VIEW - first to come to market this century. With Forum Auctions on 24/11 at an estimate of £30-50k which is comic lowballing if ever I saw it. www.forumauctions.co.uk/bidding/1200... Once again, I am regretting my life choices.

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

Academics who write during term (i.e. while teaching): 1. How many classes do you teach per term? 2. How often do you write (e.g. once/wk, when you can, etc.)? 3. When do you write (e.g. weekend, morning, at night, etc.)? 4. What's the biggest barrier(s) to you writing? 5. Do you have any tips?
A scribe in a ruby tunic with a dark purple cloak over top is seated on a wooden chair, and focusing on the task of writing in a manuscript that is resting on a lectern. The scribe appears inside a large, illuminated letter E that is blue. Within the E the background is made up of small dark blue squares with a circle in each square, almost like the wall behind the clerk is a quilt. The background outside the letter E is similar to the background in the letter E, only it is made up of red squares instead of blue ones.

This 404 Media report is interesting - but the focus on the destruction of the "rare" but not unique books is slightly misguided. I am more worried by the contamination of AI by 19th century texts...

this! "Bias against non-native English speakers in peer review persists even when authors use large LLM to improve their writing. Reviewers use language as a proxy for identity, and when AI erases one set of linguistic cues, they shift to another. The discrimination does not disappear. It adapts."
