A British Columbia election is coming. I’m able to separate my anger at BC Premier David Eby for calling an early election, and in general for the bad decisions that have greatly frustrated me, from my absolute certainty that the far right extremist BC Conservative Party would be much, MUCH worse.

We collected 3,663 signatures from people who were eligible to vote in Vancouver Quilchena during the October 2024 provincial election. While we did not meet the threshold to trigger a by-election, this still represents more than any other recall effort in the past 14 years.
For immediate release
July 20, 2026

Recall Dallas Brodie Update:
Thousands of residents send message about
respect, accountability, and community

Grassroots effort unites residents across political backgrounds,
builds momentum for future civic engagement.

Vancouver, BC —

In a riding where voter turnout in the 2024 provincial election was just 58.45%, collecting signatures from 40% of eligible voters was always going to be a significant challenge. Even so, the Recall Dallas Brodie campaign collected 3663 signatures and engaged thousands of residents in conversations about the future of representation in Vancouver-Quilchena and across British Columbia. The campaign's 3,663 signatures represent the highest total achieved by any recall effort in the past 10 years.
Residents shared a wide range of concerns with canvassers, including anger and disappointment with Brodie's conduct, concerns about representation in the riding, and a desire for more respectful and accountable leadership. When volunteers explained the catalyst for the campaign—Dallas Brodie's mocking of Indian Residential School Survivors—most residents immediately asked to sign the petition. Many also expressed regret over their vote, explaining that they supported the BC Conservatives without knowing Brodie’s extremist views.
The campaign was led by a grassroots coalition of Vancouver-Quilchena residents and supporters, including proponent Dorothy Cumming:
“I wish my elected representative was someone else; someone who had even 5% of the dedication to working with and for the constituents of this riding that I’ve seen from the canvassing and organizing team behind this recall.”
What emerged over the course of the campaign was something larger than the petition. Neighbours who’d never met before came together around the basic idea that elected officials should unite communities rather than divide them. Volunteers from across the political spectrum worked together, built relationships, strengthened the community, and demonstrated the respectful civic engagement residents want to see in politics.
And this was reflected in the residents of Vancouver-Quilchena. People want politics rooted in respect, accountability, and community. They want leaders who can work constructively with others, focus on the issues that matter, and represent the interests of the communities they serve.
The campaign also highlighted why this work remains necessary. Throughout the petition period, volunteers were subjected to abusive and hostile behaviour, including unethical conduct by Masha Kleiner, a member of Dallas Brodie's staff. Rather than discouraging our volunteers, these incidents reinforced the need for a political culture that values civility and respect.
Although this recall effort has concluded, the work is far from over. This campaign mobilized and connected residents who are now more engaged than ever in the democratic process. Members of the team will provide feedback and suggestions to update the Recall and Initiative Act to Elections BC and to legislators, to be more in line with the Election Act.
Looking ahead, supporters and volunteers will turn their energy toward the next provincial election. While this recall effort did not achieve the outcome required to trigger a by-election, it succeeded in building a movement of citizens committed to a more respectful and inclusive politics.

Quotes from canvassers:

“Canvassing has been amazing. I’ve been blown away by the support for the Recall Dallas Brodie campaign and sense of shared understanding and community amongst so, so many people. I love how so many people agree that the way people like Brodie conduct themselves makes things more dangerous for everybody, not only the specific individuals and groups they go after—which to be clear is abhorrent and disqualifying enough on its own. … A piece that stands out are the conversations I’ve had with folks who aren’t really into politics, or whose political perspectives are quite different from mine. I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with folks from an honestly surprisingly huge range of walks of life, and have felt touched by the willingness to talk things through person to person. There’s so much division and echo-chambering that gets stirred up, particularly online, and it’s felt really hopeful speaking with folks willing to connect to really hash things out as equals navigating this world together. It’s a reminder that our neighbours are not our enemies, in spite of how people like Brodie try to make them out to be.”
~ Shaun MacDonald
“I found a lot of warmth and energy from being an engaged citizen, even if it is hard to canvass as an introvert. People went out of their way to show support: a blanket on a cold day, a cold drink on a hot one, a long series of phone calls to neighbours to check in advance that they were home, ready to sign. ‘Tell them I sent you.’ All of a sudden I stopped seeing the neighbourhood as individual houses and apartments but as a web of connections. People like Brodie want to divide us and make us fearful of each other. But this recall campaign has shown me once again that we are stronger in community.”
