“We started to decline the moment we stopped hating, eradicating and expelling jews,” reads one message. “Exterminate the jewish state,” reads another. These might sound like the words of an internet troll. But according to the FBI, they were actually the work of a professor at Haverford College.

The through line of this, IMO and what correlates with my experience, is that the LLMs are very good at putting an easier UI on top of a bad UI. When we know what outcome we want but don’t know how to get there, or doing it ourselves is slow, they can be very helpful. E.g., great at excel and ppt.

The AIBOR suggests principles *and* practices, including auditing and pre- and post-deploy evaluation of AI models. Its underlying philosophy is that you have to begin by prioritizing the most important outcome: safe and effective technology that works in the interest of the public.

The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

The AI did not “go rogue.” The people who work at the company didn’t put the truck in park and it rolled down the hill. The people didn’t lock the lion’s cage and it mauled a patron. The people left the sink on and flooded the neighbors. You don’t get to “oopsie” a hack of the U.S. government.

Another classic example of ultrahazardous activity? Harms caused by having wild animals. Wild animals have minds of their own and are purportedly controlled by their human owners. *Even if* AI were considered to be causally autonomous, it’s still contextually the same as a wild animal.

When you build a machine that you can’t/don’t/won’t supervise, and it’s capable of significant harm, and it can cause that harm to others through no fault of their own, and it is quite touchy or unpredictable as to what might set it off — that’s what the ultrahazardous activity doctrine is for.

“Albanese said he met OpenAI’s chief executive Sam Altman on Wednesday to discuss the incident.” If anyone else hacks a govt, they get prosecuted, not a mtg. Sec 230 is super important, but a bad side effect has been it created a false conventional wisdom that regular laws don’t apply to big tech.

Disappearing people is incompatible with the rule of law. Transparency is a pillar of the rule of law bc a law-abiding govt wants everyone to see and acknowledge the rightness of its actions in the public interest. Justice and order depend on common understanding of and consent to the use of power.
