And yes it sucks, with the exception of a gorgeously trippy video for "I Am the Walrus" and a cameo by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band that John Lennon was clearly really unhappy about.

Fun fact: "Magical Mystery Tour" is the only Beatles film that the Beatles both wrote/directed and starred in. In a significant sense therefore it is the only Beatles film.

And having everyone on the same side does not mean you can't have drama. Some of the best storytelling doesn't have bad guys but plays off the fact that most people are trying to do their best and yet still wind up conflicting with someone else trying to do *their* best.

So they're friends in space having fun and adventures, because who needs more reasons to self-harm? There are enough real reasons to feel bad without inventing more in a made-up future. What world do you live in where you feel the need to invent more ways for people to be shit to each other?

When I wrote my novel "Activate the Device!" I knew I really ought to keep the main characters at odds until the end. It would have sustained the tension and driven the plot. But I decided I didn't like them threatening each other for the whole novel and just wanted them to be friends.

A lot of people are nostalgic for #Blakes7, and I can see why — there's a lot to like — but it's hard for me to see this as any kind of comfort watch. Is there a fan edit that takes out all the main characters and just leaves us with all the villains rubbing their hands and cackling? I'd watch that.

Dayna, Soolin, and Jenna are wasted as characters. Cally gets more of a look-in, but the women (with the exception of Servalan) are mostly in the background. It's a shame because at the start of series 3 I thought I felt the vibe starting to shift, but they didn't follow through.

These days having an opportunity for emotional impact is a gift, but storytelling in 1980 just seemed to ignore the fact that anyone might possibly have feelings. Nigel Kneale pointed out that the whole thing is just the primary cast bickering, and he wasn't wrong.

St John Karp @dazzlepansy.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Big #SPOILERS here! The lack of emotion has to be off-putting. Gan and Cally died with hardly any emphasis. Everyone gets gunned down in the finale without any drama. It's all so matter-of-fact. The biggest emotional hook in the show was when Servalan loses her children, and she's the villain.

St John Karp @dazzlepansy.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
And maybe that's the point. These are hardened rebels fighting a huge, impervious, faceless political juggernaut, so of course they have to be ruthless. That level of bleak can work in a single novel or film, but in an ongoing series you need to give the viewer someone to like.

St John Karp @dazzlepansy.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
What prevents this from being actually good is the fact that the entire crew are awful people, with the exception of Vila who is bullied mercilessly. Series 4 takes Avon from being abrasive, combative, and self-serving to being truly murderous. He is an extremely dangerous person to be around.

There's a lot to like in this show — there are some great plots, wonderful (scenery-chewing) performances, and of course all the latent #DoctorWho vibes. Servalan makes a delightful villain who, despite being unambiguously evil, still has a lot of complexity and depth.

When I wrote for Frasier I never thought about what our apartment set was saying, except that Frasier was pretty posh and had a kitchen that rendered him inaudible to people six feet away. My niece Meaghan Roddy has thought about the set a *lot* and proves it in this terrific article for Dwell.

I love that scene because I find it fascinating to see when Livia lies vs tells the truth. She's almost honest with Claudius, for once in her life, but she still lies about Drusus's death because she needs Claudius on her side. The other time she's free with the truth is Martina the poisoner!

Servalan is a woman who has literally committed genocide in order to get what she wants. She's murdered millions. Just execute her, there's no moral dilemma here. Though the show would be a whole lot less camp without her sashaying through every scene! Why does everyone want to kiss her this series?
