Alberta’s data centre policies could mean higher electricity costs for consumers. But further cost increases are not inevitable. Smart policies can help manage impacts on households while ensuring new data centre development delivers benefits. 🔗: buff.ly/B7ggOEP

A publicly-funded pipeline. More $ for carbon capture + storage. Financial incentives to double oil production. The costs are adding up — and it's a bad deal for Canadians. Our full response to the Pathways MOU announcement ⬇️ #cdnpoli #EnergySky

Nice to speak to DeSmog to estimate the climate impact of the planned 15.5GW of fossil-fuelled data centres in Canada (wipes out 15 years of reductions). You can see why Canada's gas industry loves big tech so much www.desmog.com/2026/06/11/m...
“It’s coming out of the ground, it’s not transported anywhere,” Antweiler said. “So you don’t have to pay for the pipelines —it’s locally cheap. That basically gives you a lower marginal cost than if you build a data centre running on natural gas somewhere in the United States where you have to actually get the natural gas pipeline there.”

The Privy Council document lists about 15.5 gigawatts of new gas capacity planned for data centres in Canada, although itthe ISED document notes that “it will not be possible for Alberta to connect all data centre projects in the short term” to the electric grid. Carney’s new AI strategy puts forward a lower estimate, suggesting that Canadian projects will require 5.5 gigawatts of power.

If the high-end scenario of 15.5 gigawatts materializes, it could cause an increase of somewhere between 33 to 63 megatonnes of annual greenhouse gas emissions, Joshi calculates, “effectively undoing the past 15 years of emissions reductions in Canada.”a chatr showing gas fired data centres going up

It’s been a heavy time for those of us who care about the environment. “Climate doom” is a real thing. The good news: the majority of Canadians still want more climate action from our leaders — we just aren’t talking about it enough. 🔗 buff.ly/8AfcmV6

The government is reducing service standards and Canada Post’s biggest advantage: its nationwide network. This plan is about cutting back the postal service instead of investing to give it new revenue tools through things like postal banking. It’s shameful.

The Somerset West Community Health Centre will close its supervised consumption site at the end of this month, after being forced to by the Ford government. It didn’t have to be this way.
“We anticipate our closure will place even greater burdens on hospital emergency departments, paramedics, police, and our neighborhoods, further straining an already overwhelmed system and increasing risks for those who rely on harm reduction services.”
