Did you see the story about the group who’ve been having a very intensive and slowly moving (like, a page or two at a time) book club on Finnegan’s Wake for years? Feels like a similar scenario. www.theguardian.com/books/2023/n...

On top of all the other incentives to go to ASEN2027 (good papers, etc), I think going to Cluj is basically an act of pilgrimage for scholars of everyday nationalism. #ASEN2027

Y’know, as a non-English person with temporally distant English ancestry, who also is now living in England, I find all this posturing about who gets to claim to be English from Braverman to be pretty craven and appalling.

Not sure why the mute “i” vowel in Mandarin always compels English speakers to turn whatever comes before it into a slurred “zh” sound but now almost 15 years into Xi’s rule and he’s still usually called “President Zhee” on anglophone TV.

Have been re-reading Wendell Berry’s poems since he passed away recently and was struck by how current many of his poems about Vietnam still feel. This one, entitled “Dark With Power” was especially striking to me.

To conclude, Jon E. Fox and Cynthia Miller-Idriss look back on their landmark 2008 article (link below) on #everydaynationhood and consider how social factors (esp. the rise of the internet) have caused change. They ask whether unsettled times have become the new normal. /6 doi.org/10.1177/1468...

Looking at the last 2 decades @jpaulgoode.bsky.social ponders whether the field has relied too heavily on single, ethnographic case studies and considers how scholars might move beyond them. In particular he thinks about what areas are open to cross case comparisons or general theory building. /4

💯 2019 was the culmination of at least two decades of moving goalposts and broken promises from a govt that became increasingly tired of ppl complaining about it. When Carrie Lam essentially told everyone worried about ELAB to get stuffed and sicced the cops on them, that was the final straw.

Folks in academia: if you agree to do a peer review and your verdict is that author should revise and resubmit in order to address specific revisions you wish to see, please, for the love of god, I beg you, do not check “no” when asked if you’re willing to review a resubmission. That is all.

If you had read the mainlander 'tree hollow' letters back in 2019 to support HKers/ to get things off their chests, you also get the sense than this is how *they* felt too. But then around 2008 onwards, there was a feeling of increased and visible erosion of liberties and ... well.
