Spending my morning grinding on large corporate bureaucracies to eke out tiny gains: a $52.43 credit on a Chase card and a couple of thousand air-miles on Alaska Airlines. It is all so grimy and petty and dispiriting. #modernlife

Fieldwork in #Tibet is all but closed to outsiders. @robbiebarnett.bsky.social's The Quiet State asks what research looks like now: open-source reading of the state's own paperwork, & a frank account of what that method can't show. Just published, #OpenAccess: doi.org/10.1007/978-...
Book cover of “The Quiet State: Micro-Surveillance and Normalisation in Tibet” by Robert Barnett, with a foreword by Andrew J. Nathan. White text overlays a blue sky above a dry, rocky hillside bearing large white Chinese and Tibetan lettering. At the bottom are an “Open Access” label and the Palgrave Macmillan logo.

Recent research into the DNA of an extinct human species called Denisovans has discovered that "genes associated with high-altitude adaptation in modern Tibetan populations . . . are believed to have originated from Denisovan ancestors." #Tibet #paleoanthropology eameigs.substack.com/p/the-deniso...

The Denisovan Puzzle Deepens
One of the most fascinating developments in recent years has been the realization that Denisovans were deeply connected to other human groups

Today I visited a staging area in Dhulikel for water, sanitation, and hygiene supplies that #Nepal #Rotary clubs are sending to the disaster zone where flood victims are homeless. These water filters are going out soon. Multiple clubs are combining forces to share information and transportation.

I found this book in a sealed wrapper at a bookstore in Thamel yesterday. I bought it not knowing what’s in it, kind of like I’m a contestant on storage wars. Or maybe the better analogy is Forrest Gump: it’s like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. #IATS2026

Closure of the #Gyirong border post means #Nepal cannot receive petrol shipments from China. #Gas prices are going up due to interrupted supply. But you wouldn’t guess this by the traffic in Kathmandu.

Anyone going to #Nepal during #monsoon, you NEED to know this: Mugwort repels #leeches and it is common at trail side. Rub it on your shoes and walking stick for long lasting protection.

I'm in Pokhara, #Nepal. Just did a 5-day trek to Poon Hill. Apart from the rain (it's still monsoon), everything was fine. Hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, shops, airports--all operating. Roads are dicey but repairs will start when rains end. Nepal needs tourists!

#Nepal Travelers make their way across a section of road washed out by monsoon floods. This is a few miles east of Birenthati, and it is one of many problems shutting down this highway in the Pokhara region. #monsoonflood

Landslide took out this piece of the road from Birethanti to Ghandruk, leaving 12 miles disconnected from the highway system. Monsoon rains have made the river high and angry. Nepalese are not strangers to the wrath of Mother Nature. #Nepalflood #Rasuraflood

Do any of these things during the monastery's meditation session and you'll be whacked with a stick: nod off, snore, lean on the wall, speak, laugh, stagger around, oscillate forward & back, or scratch. You have been warned. #discipline #buddhism

"Strategic ambiguity" is an apt phrase to describe the way pre-1949 China believed that Tibet was its territory, whereas Tibetans believed themselves to be independent. Both sides benefitted from this charade--until modernity demanded a clear answer to the question of whose country it was. #Tibet

I'm learning from a presentation at #IATS2026 how Kumbum Gonpa in the late 19th century had a corrupt and avaricious abbot. Later, when HHDL13 was staying there, he issued new rules to clean up the place, but his efforts failed.

Flash flooding that wipes out entire villages - that happened in May, 2008 as a result of the Sichuan quake centered at Wenchuan, next to a very unstable mountainous area. There wasn’t much coverage at the time because damage to more accessible towns & cities dominated the news. #Nepalflood

Just mentioned in opening remarks at #IATS2026: the Prime Minister of Nepal *is also* the president of Kathmandu University, the purported host of the conference. Political considerations here were in direct opposition to academic ideals. What a dilemma for him!
