Former acting editor-in-chief Patrick Lam's appeal concerns a Stand News report marking the 2nd anniversary of the CUHK clashes in Nov. 2019. The article quotes students' "subjective feelings" - judges questioned whether media outlets should be able to publish feelings that are "objectively wrong."

Dow Jones' conviction for attempting to stop Selina from participating in a union is a small, partial victory for the press and labour rights in Hong Kong. But, unfortunately, what they did is not exceptional. I spoke with several journalists who said they were also discouraged from union activity.

Hong Kong gov't sites have all gone dark to mark the death of former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa. The last time this happened was after the Wang Fuk Court fire, which killed 168 people last year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is the first time it's ever happened for a single person.

Paying tribute to ex-CE Tung Chee-hwa, Henry Tang says Hong Kong was a "cultural desert" before the handover to China and Tung's appointment in 1997. That's right: HK was a cultural desert for 150+ years - even during the golden age of cantopop and HK cinema - until the politicians gave us culture!

How do you mourn a CE? It's a question HK hasn't confronted before, and it comes at a time in our political transition when it's not always clear what the (new) norms are. In the mainland, the death of a cadre is handled with extreme caution - it can take days before the official line is determined.

Noteworthy that, in the summary of facts, the prosecution consistently referred to the “international front” as the “international battlefront.” It’s not necessarily an incorrect translation of「國際戰線」, but definitely a deliberate one that and one we may see more often from officials and state media.

It’s depressingly common to see local media highlight suspects’ ethnicity only when they’re not Han and when it has no relevance to the investigation. But this is somehow even more craven: unable to determine the ethnicity of the attacker, Oriental Daily just runs with “non-ethnically-Chinese man.”

Hong Kong’s government has presented the city’s private members’ clubs with an ultimatum: either pay much more for the land they lease at a concessionary rate, passing along the cost to members, or convert into a public facility open to anyone. It’s a more nuanced issue than it may seem on its face.

Historically, the process by which newly conquered peripheral populations were compelled to adopt the cultural norms of the Han Chinese heartland has been referred to as “Hanification” (漢化) or, occasionally, “Hua-ification” (華化). In the context of Hong Kong, the imposition of authoritarian Communist Party-style rule is variously known as “mainlandisation” (大陸化) or “reddening” (赤化).

In English, however, these all are often folded into “Sinicization” with the same corrosive reductionism we see when the concepts of ethnic Chinese huaren (華人) and PRC citizens Zhongguoren (中國人) are used interchangeably in the West, unconsciously lending rhetorical weight both to Beijing’s claims to represent the interests of diasporic communities and xenophobes’ belief that these communities should be eyed with suspicion as potential fifth-columnists.

When we talk about the Sinicization in China today (that is, 中國化), we are referring not just to the imposition of a Han-centric cultural identity but also that of a very particular political identity — one that is sold as inherently and timelessly Chinese but is, in fact, particular to the PRC under its current leadership.
