Brilliant book, that.

Yes, I think I’d basically agree with that.

He’s my guiltiest pleasure. Agree with hardly anything he wrote, when he writes on something I know about I can see it’s nonsense, but he wrote his nonsense with such panache.

I saw someone reading it on the tube the other day (between Farringdon and Moorgate on a Monday morning I think). First time I’ve seen The Fence being read in the wild. Wanted to commend them on their choice of periodical but would clearly have been too bizarre so (rightly) didn’t.

I’m an extreme example of this - own thousands of books, probably low double figures are hardbacks and I’m always looking to replace them if/when I can. Take up more room on the shelf and are less comfortable to hold while reading.

Whenever I see this, I wade into buzzkill it - the buy now! headline was invented and created by the tweeter which I think makes what could have been the greatest tweet ever one of the most disappointing. This sort of tweet only works where existing wording is discovered by someone.

I gave my teapot to an opponent I beat and I still get raised eyebrows when I tell people that. You only get a teapot if you win a show, and you only get one teapot, so they’re… sought after.

A fair few of them feel like 10k longreads similarly stretched to me. Doubtful about the new Radden Keefe one of instance - that was a good article but a whole book on it? Hmm.

Been missed for several years by my quiz league, and good to see it back. It’s a classic example of the “cosy bolthole on very unappealing thoroughfare” pub, which is one of my favourite subcategories of London boozer.

Can’t let Valentine’s Day pass without a bit of poetry, of course. Here’s one by @rtipple.bsky.social from the old place
A tweet by Rich 'Sir FarFrom' Tipple (@farfromallover): Roses are red, Florists deliver, and then two people (one of whom appears to be William Hartnell in an early Dalek story) looking at a poster which says “IT IS FORBIDDEN TO DUMP BODIES INTO THE RIVER”

This watermark graffiti by street artist Mathieu Tremblin is, like, the best thing ever.
A photo that appears to have a "gettyimages" watermark but the watermark is actually painted directly on the bridge.

If it was a single album, I think it would probably be regarded as an all timer. As it is it’s very good but quite mixed and sprawling.

Yup, I agree with that. I certainly didn't have it nailed on, and I'm allegedly one of the better quizzers in the country. Feels like all S-Gs in my lifetime (born 1978) would have been much easier than naming Guterres.

Yes if it’s still Guterres. No otherwise.

ah fair, I can see a few references plus this photo in Seabrook’s volume now I check, which must be where Google AI is pulling it from.

David Stainer @davidstainer.bsky.social · 28/12/2025
Yes. Also, I wonder if the “link” to this garage is a bit AI-invented? I can see two websites using the photo in relation to the murders but neither explains precisely why. It is mentioned in Google’s AI write up of the garage name but feels a bit thin to me.

Years ago I was once doing a quiz using buzzers, like University Challenger. And a player buzzed in very early on a geographical sounding clue to say “Wester Ross”. I was genuinely very impressed at his Scottish geographical knowledge for about 24 hours before looking up the clue and realising.

rich dudes got freakier after butlers fell out of fashion, like say what you will about having domestic servants but clearly it was some sort of moderating force on old rich dudes having a fancy man follow you around saying shit like "oh dear sir, that wouldn't be very becoming"
