I remember a word from long ago in some maths teaching paper (can’t remember which one): “procept”. Kind of like a process but also a concept.

Yes. But then (a) Provide statisticians to your research students so they don’t have to source them themselves. (b) If it’s an undergrad assignment then provide appropriate support to simulate the talk-to-a-statistician. Don’t let them muddle it out themselves.

Funny how this sort of thing always happens before a whole team meeting about new work structures and processes.

Can you tell I had a crying student doing a research proposal assignment yesterday?

You can teach people (eg psych students) all the stats you want, but as soon as you ask them to design a research project, you’ll find it’s never enough. One tiny tweak to their idea will necessitate a stats procedure they’ve never heard of and don’t know how to talk about.

Once, I sat in on a maths lecture and the lecturer asked the room a question and nobody answered. I whispered to one of the students, “Why didn’t you answer?” He replied, “Because whatever I said it wouldn’t have made a difference to what would happen next.” I think about that often.

A course like Abstract Algebra or Real Analysis is wild because the entire assessment is based on writing poetry for people who in general can’t put their finger on what makes a good poem but know what they don’t like.

Realised I could push myself unreasonably hard to do the thing I said I would do two weeks ago before the meeting tomorrow, or just apologise for not doing it. I apologised for not doing it. Proud of myself.

Oh boy. This is… actually a very smart way to approach life in 2026

"Oh God," muttered Ford, slumped against a bulkhead. He started to count to ten. He was desperately worried that one day sentient life forms would forget how to do this. Only by counting could humans demonstrate their independence of computers.

Did you know you only need a small brain to make silly little drawings?
4 panel comic:
Panel 1: pink blob guy on a table, pencil in their hands. Grey circle on a piece of paper and a glass of water on the table. They say “look here”
Panel 2: Proudly, they hold up the drawing of a grey blobby character on two stick legs up in the air. The pink blob says “I drew this!”
Panel 3: Satisfied they sit back down on the table. They now go “it’s not much, but..” The grey drawing looks a bit peeved because the drawer is calling it “not much”
Panel 4: But it’s okay, because now the pink blob is very pleased finally. He says “it came from my brain!” Holding the pencil up. The grey drawing blob is happy again, too. End well, all well!

It's now two years since I started writing observations of the world around me. I've made a second edition of my little book "What I noticed along the way" with all 431 observations. The journey has brought me such joy and I hope it brings you joy too. drive.google.com/file/d/11TUl...

A very small girl sits on the train watching her dad’s phone, which she holds carefully with both hands. The sound is lost in the noise of the train, but for a moment the noise subsides enough to hear, “Hello? I’m stuck in the bath, can you rescue me? I’m sorry Daddy Pig, I’m rescuing a tortoise.”

A man leans against the fence on the train platform, unwrapping the last bubblegum in a pack. He puts the gum in his mouth and lets the paper fall to the ground, where there is already a whole pack’s worth of wrappers scattered around.

I want to tell the students that they don’t have to earn the right to support. They don’t have to be “bad enough” to need support and they don’t have to be a “good enough” student to deserve support.

Here is a graph of the number of characters per observation across time in my little book "What I noticed along the way". drive.google.com/file/d/11TUl...
A scatter plot.
The title reads "What I noticed along the way. Observation length across 2025 & 2025".
The x-axis has a date lined up with each vertical gridline, the first of each month from 1/10/2024 to 1/11/2026.
The y-axis is labelled "Number of Characters". It starts at 0 and has numbers in 50's up to 350.
A cloud of blue dots is scattered across the graph, with most between 100 ad 200, and none below 50 or above 300.
Some months have more observations in them than others.

"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence
they did the research in the first place because they believed you and wanted to tell people about it. they are not our enemies.

reblog by aphony-cree

people always go "Instead of spending all that time on a study they could have just listened to us when we said these thing happen"

they did listen, that's how studies work, they asked people about their experiences and put all the data together in a nice package that can be cited

I’ve never once seen a textbook suggest to shade the outside! (I am in Australia.) But nevertheless its how I help students make sense of regions with multiple rules. Though what I usually do is extremely roughly sketch the edges and shade the outside, then draw a neat sketch and shade the inside.

"ADHD label risks lifelong harm to children." If you don't label the disorder, then what we will be labelled instead is "Lazy." "Underachiever." "Doesn't live up to their potential." "Bad student." Those labels come with pain, shame, and abuse. The ADHD label comes with a chance for support.
