#SmallPoemSunday @tomsnarsky.bsky.social yes, more #JaneHirshfield #AReamofPaper “A deer rises onto her haunches to reach for an apple, though many fallen apples are on the ground.”
A REAM OF PAPER
I have a ream of paper,
a cartridge of ink,

almonds,
coffee,
a wool scarf for warmth.

Whatever handcuffs the soul,
I have brought here.

Whatever distances the heart,
I have brought here.

A deer rises onto her haunches
to reach for an apple,

though many fallen apples are on the ground.

I’m so lucky to be able to do this. This will be the 24th episode (S2E10), and I’ve put my all into it. Health issues and money (or lack of it) be damned. I turn 59 tomorrow, and it’s well past the time for me to use phrases like “Someday.” It’s either soon or now. Thanks for all your kind help!!

I did not think I would live to see the day that I became tired of talk about Homer (not Simpson), but my soul has lost its patience. Someone just used "Homeric" as an adjective, and my gay, dirty mind read it as "Homoerotic," which sounded WAY more interesting.

Please don’t 1. Hold my hand while you say this. 2. Say “Why is nobody talking about”—cuz you literally are! 3. Tell me, “Nobody tells you when you (fill in the blank), because you ain’t nobody. 4. Start a statement with, “I don’t know who needs to hear this.” For fuck’s sake, know your audience!

Having worked, / I would sleep Wendell Berry
SEPTEMBER 2

In the evening there were flocks of nighthawks passing southward over the valley. The tall sunflowers stood, burning on their stalks to cold seed, by the still river. And high
up the birds rose into sight against the darkening clouds. They tossed themselves among the fading landscapes of the sky like rags, as in
abandonment to the summons their blood knew. And in my mind, where had stood a garden straining to the light, there grew
an acceptance of decline. Having worked, I would sleep, my leaves all dissolved in flight.

Part of this rant is a me-problem--I am so so so so so tired of being broke, and I'm more broke than ever. Much of it is a systemic problem--how did the system get so broke that we ask people to pay to have their work read by editors? Part of it is institutional--late capitalism is super bad.

A succinct verdict on the persecution of the poor young academic who just died by suicide. Plagiarism is common. Persecution of the kind he endured is uncommon, aka selectively applied. The reason why he was targeted seems as clear as it is ugly.

If the public care more about gas prices than legitimate threats to democracy I think that is less an indictment of the public and more an indictment of the system (media environment, elite institutions, political structures, economy) that generated that outcome.

Poem on the Last Day of My Thirties
I find a can of beans in the kitchen.
Great Northern, left there open the night before.
They're past their prime now. Into the trash they go.
I'm ashamed of the waste. I didn't intend to wake wondering if I've spent well the years in this vessel but sometimes a question needs to be left out on the counter to know what should be done with it in the morning.
