Masked thugs turning up to intimidate and cause disorder have no place on our streets. I am asking whether our laws are fit for purpose when it comes to groups that organise intimidation and disorder. Political disagreement is part of democracy. Violence and intimidation are not.

When the story of why humanity didn't stop climate change is written, it will feature front pages like this. Even as the skies blacken with climate change-induced wildfires, right wing media continue their relentless crusade against measures to tackle it.
The Times: Net zero risks blackouts. Below a photo of French wildfires.

NEW - Rachel Reeves said she will "accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead." "It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better. "But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him."

This is remarkable.
Bar chart which shows y-axis running 0-8000, and x-axis showing years 2019 and 2024. For 2019, a light orange bar runs up to just over 6000, with a darker orange running up to 8000. For 2024, a green bar runs up to 4000, with a dark green running to about 5000. The text "40% lower" is on the lighter green bar. Text at the top of the graphic reads "Estimated air pollution deaths are down by around 40%. New analysis estimates deaths associated with air pollution in London reduced substantially between 2019 and 2024." Text at the bottom of the graphic reads "Note: darker shading shows estimated ranges. Data based on a comparison of estimated mortality burden using updated methods and a scenario-based analysis where only air pollution changes. Source: london.gov.uk/aqmortality". The Mayor of London logo sits in the bottom right-hand corner.

Two weeks isn't enough. Every dad deserves the chance to be there in those first weeks supporting their partner bonding with their baby and building strong families from day one. That's why I'm backing the #ExtraTimeForDads campaign to improve paternity leave and give fathers the time they need ⚽👶

Keir Starmer's response to Nigel Farage at PMQs just now was probably the most powerful and eloquent I have seen him in the Commons. The full answer is worth reading.
“A grieving family have asked us not to respond in the way that the leader of Reform has responded. They've asked us not to. They have lost their son in the most appalling circumstance. They make a simple plea of us as human beings to please not exploit that. That is their plea to us.
“We all need to reflect on those words of Henry's father. My response, and the response of others to be fair, has been focused on the lessons to be learned so we can deliver justice. “His response has been to appeal for rage – rage. That's his response to a father who has lost his son and asked for that not to happen.
“Exploiting this tragedy to create grievance and division would be wrong in any circumstances, but to do it when the family are expressly saying please don't is unforgivable. It shows exactly who he is.”

Northern Powerhouse Rail said we'll build East West across the Pennines first then we might do Birmingham to Manchester after (but the Northern Powerhouse Rail will include some bits such as Manchester Airport to City Centre which would be used by HS2)

I’m proud to announce that Strood has been awarded up to £20 million in “Pride in Place” funding over the next decade, with local people helping shape how it’s spent. It could support a new community centre, better green spaces, and bringing empty shops back into use. More here: buff.ly/FUA6HBu

Luckily since last year councils don't have to bid anymore and it's based on a 3 year needs based formula. Which given the council I'm a member of never got anything for buses is a great blessing. It would be nice if our major bus company actually invested in our fleet (or services) however.
