My new book has a cover! The folks @columbiaup.bsky.social did a fantastic job. It captures one of the book's key arguments on the relationship between an 'everyday technology' of American mobility, the US frontier, and empire. Look for it on store shelves just in time for Bike Month 2027.

I was lucky enough to be able to say a few words to thank the committee, society, and the conference, and to underline the collective value of what we do in History and the Humanities. We only work as a collective, and it matters more than ever to recognize that.
Award photo with a hideous moustacheAwards speech: I want to clarify that I'm in costume for the disco, and this isn't my usual attire, or my usual face.

I just want to take this opportunity to say thank you. I am honoured to receive recognition from the Social History Society - a society that has done so much, for so many, and which serves as such a positive force for the study of history both inside and outside of the academy.

Being at this conference has reiterated the power of community, and the value of the work we all do. Good historical work takes time and support; we confront and challenge, but we do so in dialogue and through collaboration. None of us work alone, and none of us should stand alone. This matters even more in our current climate, and I want to thank the plenary panel yesterday for arguing this so passionately. I want to take this opportunity to say that this society - and this conference - represents the best of these collaborative endeavours, and underlines the enduring value of social history. I'm honored to be here with you.
