Finally, I had a chance to finish this excellent book, Traders in Men. No one, whether in the UK, Africa, or the Americas, comes out looking good in this narrative. This is a highly readable exploration of the connections among the merchants that made the Transatlantic slave trade possible.

Last week, I had the opportunity to discuss my new book about free people of color and the Civil War in Boston's African Meeting House. The building was a recruitment site for the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War and is now part of the Museum of African American History.

Christiana Carteaux Bannister is not a name that most people think of when discussing the Civil War. However, she’s an important actor in my forthcoming book, Out of This Strife Will Come Freedom. She was one of the strongest supporters of the 54th Mass. Inf. during the struggle for equal pay.
