Dr. Craig Thurtell was the department chair and APUSH teacher at the school where I started my career. He was an amazing teacher and excellent mentor. Because he did his job so well, he wasn’t able to turn his dissertation into a boo -until now. I am so delighted for him. Congratulations, Craig! 🗃️🗺️

This was a transformative book for me: I study extractive processes of settler agriculture in my neck of the woods (the US Midwest), but Scars on the Land helped me see how devastating they were in the American South, while centering enslaved people’s agency and knowledge. Can’t recommend it enough.

It’s nice to have my work corroborated by another DNA test. What is also deeply gratifying is the vindication of Madison Hemings, Israel (Gillette) Jefferson who spoke of TJ and SH, & Fawn Brodie, who put the men’s recollections in her TJ bio that I read at 14 and got me started on this journey.

Since his retirement in 1989, I have argued that Tommy John deserved a place in the Hall of Fame. He still might get in some day, but it’s sad he won’t get to see it.
