Unintended consequences often do the real damage. A proposal by the last government to streamline the GMC’s categories of impairment would weaken their ability to manage cases where a doctor’s health is at stake. So important to protect doctors’ wellbeing when they are at their most vulnerable.

This is a vital piece of research which further highlights the pressure and stigma placed on doctors experiencing mental ill health. We urgently need both a culture change and crucially, sufficient quality mental health support that is both preemptive and thorough.

I worked at the NHS Confederation when NHS England was created and remember how all consuming that was along with all the other associated changes. There is going to be a lot of capacity and energy that now goes into its abolition
