i hate digger and i love how much i hate digger. i am going to see the movie again in two days with more friends. it is climate change freddy got fingered
'Digger' review
The first 20 minutes of the film set up a brilliant comedy that skewers our modern lives today. And then it spends about 2 hours making us feel awful for thinking the first 20 minutes were good, on purpose, over and over again. It is a joyless, colorless film that poorly parodies Citizen Kane and Dr.
Strangelove intentionally, making a mockery of essentially all modern American liberal political commentary and comedy. And a parody of a parody is interesting but uncomfortable and challenging to watch.A parody of Donald Trump today is neither funny nor poignant and the movie knows that. By the film's conclusion, you're left wondering whether spending big budgets to make climate films at all makes any sense. It
would be reductive as well to say the film inspires you to take on the actual
catastrophe outside, because its so confident in its future of doom that really, you're only left with a wordless unease about the idea of apocalypse fiction itself. To watch "Digger" is to experience a deeply miserable punk rock waste of more than one hundred million dollars, à la Freddy Got Fingered - but you will not laugh, unless you're laughing at yourself for being in the theater at all.I enjoyed Digger, and then I hated Digger, and then I enjoyed hate-watching Digger, and then I felt weird because the movie flat out told me to feel disgusting for enjoying hate-watching Digger, and to like hating myself, and I didn't want to listen to that part, and that's the point. Andy Kaufman couldn't have done it better. The Wolf of Wall Street tried to pull this trick and failed. Vice and Don't Look Up both tried to pull this trick and failed. So many other meta-media films have tried to do this recently and they're boring because they are entertaining. Digger is so boring, and frustrating, and uncomfortable, and that's why it works, and I hate that, too, which I also love.Digger will be a massive commercial flop and then go to streaming where it'll be remembered as a cult classic forever. I will watch this movie again and again, and I will find new things to hate to love and love to hate. I couldn't recommend it more highly to anyone who wants to see a piece of ridiculous high-budget avant garde mistakenly promoted as a mass appeal "dark comedy" because it stars Tom Cruise. And yet even the inaccurate PR is part of the point of Digger, to reel you in with precisely the bait it wants to chide you for taking.

Mirror life would be like life through the looking glass: every handed molecule a mirror image of the natural one. It'd be hard to engineer this, but not impossible But it would be risky. An escaped mirror bacteria could grow, living off of symmetrical food molecules, but evade our immune systems

David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Many biological molecules are "handed." Think how a left handed glove won't fit your right hand. So if Alice goes into the looking glass, and tries to play baseball, her catcher's mit won't fit her dominant hand anymore This includes immune system molecules

the Washington Sun source article had quotes both from Platner and from Wood. One of the Wood quotes, Reed mistakenly attributes to Platner. (The Needle itself mistakenly claimed that the source had no Platner quotes at all, but it did, and Reed quoted it correctly.)

the bit that did more to make me take this seriously is the straight vs curly marks analysis (evidence of pasting, though not on its own proving where it was pasted from)
140
David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
*misattribute a Wood quote to Platner. Platner was also quoted elsewhere in the source (which The Needle missed). The source paragraph for the Wood quote just said "he" instead of "Wood," so this example on its own could easily be human sloppiness. bsky.app/profile/davi...

David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
it's not proof of where it was pasted from (and e.g. pasting into an LLM for proofreading then pasting back would also do this, not just LLM writing) but yeah the Needle was more thorough in trying to show it than my first glance impression

David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I don't myself trust stylistic analyses like length or complexity of writing (I don't really trust pangram either, this is more just a check on agreement vs disagreement than an answer). The evidence of pasted content and aligning that with the release of Opus is the more interesting argument to me
110
David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Here's what it says about the one that The Needle argues has 99.8% of its words inside fully pasted paragraphs
100
David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
hm, actually Pangram does say it detects AI in some other articles. Though interestingly, in this one the bits where it says it detects AI don't include the paragraph The Needle cites on the basis of straight marks

David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
the straight vs curly apostrophes argument is interesting. (though btw @janembrigham.bsky.social, your reproduction of the passages accidentally erased the difference!)
120
David Bahry @davidbahry.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The Needle does point out some actual quotation errors, but then makes its own quotation errors, so human sloppiness seems to be common. (One quote Reed attributes to Platner was really from Wood; but the source did also give a direct quote from Platner, which The Needle incorrectly says it didn't.)

This is the best piece I've seen on the role that Heritage Foundation has played in the assault on public education. This did not come out of nowhere; it was a plan that was decades in the making, the seeds planted a long time ago and it's been the Trump admin that has allowed them to flourish.
