This week 25 yrs ago: Isabelline Wheatear at Landguard. With quite a few scarcities. Red-necked Stint at Somersham followed later in the day with Pallass’s Grasshopper Warbler ✅ on Blakeney Point (never thought I would see one so well) with Ortolan and Grey Phalarope bonus.

Migfest was as enjoyable as ever this year and nice to be able to catch up with everyone as well as see some birds. Some of my personal highlights were Sooty Shearwater, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpipers and migrating Pink-footed Geese on Sunday. @david-walsh.bsky.social @lucasnature.bsky.social

A fantastic few hours at Mr Bird’s Hide in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand today. The birds clearly know he feeds regularly! Phone scope pics of Ferruginous & Bar-backed Partridges + female/juv Grey Peacock-Pheasant. Photo of male Kalij Pheasants. Scaly-breasted Partridge & lots of Red Junglefowl seen too.

A last minute booking has brought me to Thailand for a short break, based at Baan Maka Nature Lodge near Kaeng Krachan National Park. A dream came true this morning. Within an hour of starting my birding in the grounds I was watching a pair of Blue-winged Pittas, a long-overdue lifer. Very chuffed!

My final survey of the spring/summer was a WCBS visit to Brantham this morning. 94 butterflies of 12 species, both personal August highs. Highlight a helice female Clouded Yellow. Spent the afternoon with my mum then saw Black Stork at Hemley on my way home!

I was fortunate to head to the Peak District for a couple of nights last week. Highlights included several Pied Flycatchers in Padley Gorge plus two singing Wood Warblers nearby. On the moors I found Red Grouse and Golden Plover, whilst a local river held Dipper, Goosander and lots of Mandarins!

Our earliest arriving Reed warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) by 2 days.  A calm morning produced some decent migrants, with today bringing our first; Reed warbler, Whimbrel and Yellow Wagtail of this spring. Other birds on site included 6 Wheatear and at least 2 Willow warbler singing. A few migrants were seen out to sea with 6 Mediterranean gull, 6 Meadow pipit, a Swallow, and the Whimbrel flying north. Flying south; 8 Oystercatcher, 3 Swallow, 2 Brent Geese, a Little egret, a Meadow pipit and a Jackdaw. Also notably the Blackbird ringed was recently fledged but well developed - quite early!   Moth Trapping: Bloxworth Snout (Hypena obsitalis) was the most noteworthy, once migrating but recently building small populations on the southern coast, first for spring alongside the Diamondback moth and Light-brown apple moth... slowly getting a more diverse mix.    Ringing: 15 Chiffchaff, 13 Blackcap, 1 Blackbird, 1 Robin, 1 Whitethroat, 1 Linnet, 1 Reed warbler, 1 Sparrowhawk.

Headed up the coast with @joshuapeverley.bsky.social for what proved to be a wonderfully uplifting day. It’s always special hearing the first Nightingale of the year, today with someone who hadn’t heard one before. Overall we tallied exactly 100 species, mainly at Westleton/Minsmere. #suffolkbirding

Update. I managed to read the ring, and have discovered that the bird was ringed by @btobirds.bsky.social Suffolk rep Mick Wright at Melton, 17 km away, in 2024, Incredibly it is the 7th ringed Reed Bunting in my suburban Ipswich garden since 2021 (five Suffolk, singles Essex & Kent) #suffolkbirding

Reed Buntings have visited my garden in 12 of the past 13 years. I feared I might draw a blank in 2026, but two males have just appeared! The only other year with a first visit as late as April was 2019. One is ringed, so I hope it returns for me to try and read the ring #suffolkbirding

An awesome day with @naturetrek.bsky.social in Ecuador. We started watching a Cock-of-the-rock lek, definitely something on my ‘most wanted list’.
