VIVIAN MAIER was a Nanny for 40yrs who unbeknownst to anyone spent her free time taking over 150,000 photos of whatever interested her. 2yrs before she died her photos were found in a lock up she’d failed to keep up payments on and her decades of incredible work suddenly exploded upon the world.

Love these photos of a gansey sweater over at Highland Threads. Such great knitting. A gansey is a type of fisherman sweater with identical front and back sides. Last photo shows one from Flamborough Marine, my favorite contemporary maker for this style. highlandthreads.co.uk/wick-museum

Sir Ian McKellen orates 'The Stranger's Case' from 'Sir Thomas More' by Shakespeare about the Evil May Day xenophobic riot of 1517 in London. This passage was written 400 years ago, but times never change. Humanity refuses to change its unwarranted bias against 'others'.

Had to grade a ton of student writing this week and developed a list of “real talk” questions to ask them about common issues I saw in their papers. It turned into a surprisingly productive conversation.
Screenshot showing a list of questions: “8. Why do you cite from random shitbags on the internet instead of from any of the qualified,
vetted, peer-reviewed, reputable, expert sources I assigned for our class readings?
9. Why did I spend 13 years in college earning a Ph.D. in order to be called “Ms. Liming” in
papers written by my own students?
10. Why do you love prepositions—like, love, love, loooooooove them – and hate me

The manager was right — some longtime shoppers closed their accounts in protest — but Marcus stuck with his decision. At the time of the flagship's closure, the Main Street store had been open for 112 years.

These victories were achieved through the efforts of Civil Rights activists, along with support from Neiman Marcus president Stanley Marcus, who was an early advocate for desegregation. The Neiman Marcus Dallas store manager purportedly warned Marcus that he would destroy his business this way.

The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky lunch spot frequented by Dallas elites. Later, they welcomed Black shoppers to come and buy clothes without restrictions.

For instance, they had to try on clothes over their clothes, put on protective covers when trying on hats, or weren't allowed to make returns once they brought the clothes home. These policies stemmed from racist fears that white customers would refuse merchandise previously worn by Black shoppers.
Department Store, Mobile, Alabama, 1956

By Gordon Parks

Promised gift of The Gordon Parks FoundationJoanne Wilson, one of the Thorntons’ daughters, is shown standing with her niece in front of a department store in downtown Mobile. The pair is impeccably dressed in light, summery frocks. The jarring neon of the “Colored Entrance” sign looming above them clashes with the two young women’s elegant appearance, transforming a casual afternoon outing into an example of overt discrimination. Notice the fallen strap of Wilson’s slip. Though this detail might appear discordant with the rest of the picture, its inclusion may have been strategic: it allowed Parks to emphasize the humanity of his subjects.

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵

When authoritarian regimes collapse, their leaders experience symbolic deaths, largely through the destruction & removal of monuments that they've built to glorify themselves and affirm their power. Sometimes called "iconoclasm," who gets a statue or monument is always a symbolic struggle for power.
