A2. They think that we are looking to bait and switch. They have been conditioned to accept punitive grading approaches and it takes time for them to adjust. Over the years we have changed the language we use to communicate progress to reinforce the emphasis on growth. #UngradingChat

A1. I think it all comes down to trust. I constantly ask for their feedback on what's working and what can be improved. They need to see us as their partners in learning and find value in what we do. It's not an easy task. #UngradingChat

There was a contradiction between what I said I valued and what my assessment methods valued. My grading policy conflicted with an important message I was trying to send to my students about failure. — Anthony Lince #GBGEdu #growbeyondgrades growbeyondgrades.org/blog/opportu...

Labor-based Grading Contracts and the Opportunity for Failure — Grow Beyond Grades
Writers understand that writing requires revision, tinkering, and mistakes. Lots and lots of it. Most student writers, however, don’t welcome failure and mistakes so easily. Why?

A4. It all depends on the conversation and what they need. I find the easiest access point is altering the language we use to discuss Ss. Stop labeling. Use asset-based language. This usually shifts how we think about students and the rest follows. #UngradingChat

A2. Start of 15-16 my AP was looking for people to start thinking about SBG. I volunteered due to frustration with the current system. Was planning for SY 16-17. I had iteration 1 ready for mid-year so I made the switch. It wasn't a raging success but I saw enough good to continue. #UngradingChat

It's a curious thing that The Science of Learning has everything to say about memory management and nothing to say about motivation. It's implied that the purpose of learning in school is memorization for the test, not questioning at all whether learning for the test is even the best way to learn.

When I started #Ungrading 2.5 years ago, I knew it was going it was going to be a game changer for our classroom. What I didn't realize at the time was just how much it was going to humanize it too.
Image of a Gr 12 personal response to a task requiring Ss to create a visual of the setting in the novel, Beartown, based on the descriptions in the first 3 chapters.
1. Student's response touched on how she developed a deeper understanding of the story and engaged more with the text s a result of having to create a visual representation.

2. Student made a text-self connection as she spoke about how the task reminded her of her own family's journey of immigrating to Canada and the challenges they faced with respect to power and wealth disparity, bias, and outsiders vs insiders.

3. Finally, student commented about how the fact that this class is Ungraded allows Ss to be creative and original and appreciate others' work, rather than comparing their product to their classmates as they do when they feel they are in competition with each other for grades.

A5. Grades are discussed twice a year when I'm required to post them. At all other times we discuss developmental targets and where Ss are in relation to the targets. We use a grade translation chart to translate to a grade. Targets are updated at the start of each unit. #UngradingChat
This is a grade translation chart to convert progress into a grade when necessary. It is just as arbitrary as any grading system but shifts the focus to the developmental targets.

If all skills are on target, that is an A. All skills one level below target, that is a B-. The targets are updated based on the amount of practice provided on each skill. They are updated at the start of each new unit.

A4. I found the key to getting them invovled is having a framework they can use to discuss their responses. Using that framework, we do regular checkpoints that are self-assessed and annotated by the students. Peer assessment and collaborative work, as well as conferencing. 1/2 #ungradingchat

1/2 A3. There are some challenges specific to each alternate assessment model but a few common ones I've encountered. 1. Finding a system that communicates what's happening in the classroom. 2. The nostalgia of grades #edusky #ungradingchat
