Muin and the Seven Birds Hunters 🐻🦉 This story looks at a constellation known as Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The Mi’kmaq also saw these stars as a bear (Muin). Each year, we can watch Muin as she moves through the northern sky, repeating a cycle of life and death as seven hunters chase her.

Ash splint baskets, like this one, played a crucial role in the economic survival of many Mi’kmaw people. Originally made for domestic use and occasional trading, these baskets became an important commodity starting in the 1700s with the influx of European settlers.

The Luna Moth (Actias luna) is fairly common in Nova Scotia, though it is seldom seen by people because of its nocturnal life. While this beautiful insect may look like a butterfly, its feathery antennae are a dead giveaway. It’s definitely a moth – one of the largest in North America.

Of course, reusable shopping bags and baskets are nothing new. But there are few examples to rival this basket made in the 1800s from ash splints, sweet grass and cotton fibre.
A tall, open-top woven basket made from wood splints. The basket has straight sides that widen toward the rim and a flat base. Two long, slender looped handles rise from opposite sides and extend well above the rim. The surface is tightly woven in a regular, horizontal pattern, and the front is decorated with two floral ornaments, each with layered petal shapes surrounding a textured, raised center.
