After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

I'm sure you'll get more than enough copy and paste messages about how our forests are essential for outdoor recreation or tourist economy or whatever but if that was persuasive I wouldn't have to send this email in the first place. We're having this conversation, if we're having one at all, who knows if anyone will actually read this, because people want to cash checks and logging industry pays more than forest gift shops. If someone does read this, I'm not sure if it'll just be an intern that agrees with me in weathered helplessness or someone that actually deserves my ire. If you don't deserve it, relay my contempt to whoever does and treat yourself when you get off work.

I'm honestly struggling to think of what would motivate the slack-jawed incurious gluttons bent on pillaging every facet of society and our planet as quickly as possible before their undeserved moment passes. I could try appealing to humanity, sentimentality, or the divine ordained task to be proper stewards to the land, all things for which those who pursue the rescission of the Roadless Rule clearly scorn or at least place little value in so we can probably just move on to persuasion through consequence.

If there's any reason to be appealed to at all, it seems important to underscore the fact that it is unbelievably myopic to lift protections for our forests. How many times have we altered the land or destroyed keystone species only to be left with bigger problems to perpetually clean up? As the climate becomes more and more unstable, every acre of old growth carbon sequestration is vitally essential but even if you're foolish enough to ignore the urgency of climate change, you can't deny the immediate consequences of widespread logging. How much erosion will be caused by all this? How many lives will be impacted by landslides and flooding? How much will it cost to repair the damage done by shortsighted profit chasing? Will this be worth it? I doubt it. There's always a bigger domino ready to fall and everyone eager to push this forward doesn't care enough to see it because they won't be standing under it when it falls. Probably, anyway. Whatever the payout is to gamble on the domino not falling, I highly urge keeping the Roadless Rule in place because unfortunately as with most cases like this, the wager is on a collective future rather than just the collateral of the few that stand to benefit and to be honest, I'm as sick as I can reasonably articulate of my future being added to bets against my will.

It seems prudent to mention somewhere, I suppose here, that there is no simple replacement for old growth forest. It is profoundly complex through centuries of biological processes in ways that simply replanting (either for sustainability or just to grow more "product") is laughably unfit as a substitute. There is no substitute. Once these forests are gone, we will never see them again. A permanent solution to the absurdly embarrassing and temporary problem of just not having enough money.

I'm not sure if it even means anything to ask this but I'll ask it anyway. Provided I'm speaking to someone that would profit from this, I can assume your motivations and how a nice life in the present takes precedence over concerns for the cans you kick down the road but are you actually really satisfied with such a cartoonishly boorish legacy? Assuming you have family you care for, is the world your great grandchildren will inherit actually worth inheriting? It might be if we left any semblance of the natural world intact for them to enjoy, but I suppose that all depends on if you aspire to live to be more than a one dimensional parody of a Dr. Seuss antagonist. Surely we can do better than that. A world worth living in depends on us doing better than that.
