Al music is now very, very good. You just don't know yet because all Al music circulating today is from ~2-3 generations ago.

Driving across Iowa and Nebraska this weekend. Did the same drive a month ago and gas is up at least $1 everywhere, and diesel more than that. Usually these are some of the cheapest gas states and they’re well over $4.

A digital illustration of a version of the big board from Wheel of Fortune. An array of green rectangles (each bearing an icon of a hand with crossed fingers inside a circle with rays), and white rectangles that indicate the letters in the secret phrase contestants are trying to guess. The board is not yet solved and reads like this:

M_YB_ I_
_ILL H_PP_N
__D_Y

Standing next to the board in a shiny pink and maroon evening gown and ready to turn around newly-guessed letters is a woman whose head is a human hand with crossed fingers.

Below the board in the space where viewers at home are informed what type of phrase is in play it simply reads ‘PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE’

Brains are dumb. I spent literally weeks, maybe even months, beating myself up about writing about how social sucks. “Nobody wants to read this” “It’s self indulgent bullshit” etc etc etc. Finally just put the thing out, and like 10,000 people have enthusiastically read it in like 24 hours.

It wasn't so much a choice at first. I spent much of the summer on the road, which meant that getting online was nearly always a struggle, and so when I didn't have to, I stayed off. And when I did get on—I was working my remote job doing book research—doing work was the focus. I didn't fall prey to

Social was best when it was like a flea market, a place full of surprising finds with familiar regulars you catch up with. At some point it became a Walmart, with pay to play placements and optimized to extract money and time. It is now a chore, not a place I am drawn to.

I tend to think of the Internet as having intentional and non-intentional spaces. A good, well moderated forum or subreddit can be intentional. But the vast majority of social sites are non-intentional and arguably worse than vegging out in front of the TV.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about how if we want things to be better we gotta have people willing to try new shapes of interaction. The last decade of "social media" has landed us off a cliff, and Dan really nails the feeling here. I am tired. I am SO tired, and I think I need to blog again.
