Fortunately (or, unfortunately?) the NTSC stepped in a couple of years later to establish a standard color TV system that was backward compatible with B&W transmissions. I added "unfortunately" because the new standard was inferior to other systems being developed at the time.

The first color TV hit stores #OTD in 1951. “Color TV will sweep the country!" said the head of CBS, whose proprietary technology was deemed superior by the FCC—even though it was incompatible w/ black & white TVs. Only 100 sets were sold—and CBS killed its color broadcasts 3 weeks later. #TVSky

Believe it or not, the "Office of Defense Mobilization" had a big hand in killing color TV in 1951, too. Because of... the Korean War effort?

Nyt article:
WASHINGTON, Oct. 19-Color television was postponed indefinitely today because of materials scarcities resulting from the defense mobilization effort. Charles E. Wilson, Defense Mobilizer, asked the Columbia Broadcasting System to suspend plans for mass production of color television receivers. In New York, C. B. S. announced that it would comply. It also said it would drop its color video broadcasts because there would not be enough color receivers in the hands of the public to warrant such broadcasts.

It's hard to imagine a world where Big Trouble in Little China was immediately and overwhelmingly successful (and didn't eventually become a cult classic.) But in the decades since its release, it's revealed itself to have much more staying power than its stiff-lipped adventure peers.

This brings back some fond memories of attending the early Trek cons in the 1970s, and the discussions among the fans (and Ellison himself, at the 1973 con), about what might have been with his episode had he gotten his way with the script. (I was 13, but my mom was a big fan, so there we were!)
