when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

are young people today aware that there was an active effort 20-25 years ago to stop depicting smoking as cool and glamorous because people got tired of watching their loved ones die of cancer and heart disease from something preventable? seems like classic history repeating itself stuff

I haven't seen nearly enough discussion of this incredible, very in-depth piece of reporting on Palantir. We tend to talk about the company as if they're some all-powerful panopticon, but the reality is they're a sub-par data integration middleware company with better branding and lobbying.

I used to have to drive around the country doing UCAS events and my uni was too cheap hire me a Tomtom so I printed off AA route Finder instructions and sellotaped them to the dash. 9/10 they got me to the general vicinity whereupon I just had to start shouting at pedestrians for directions. Love it

generally i don't like to prescript how people should live but in this case, i'll make an exception
a pretty, simple illustration of australian native birds and plants (including a lorikeet and a kookaburra) acting as a sort of frame around a black-text-on-white box in the middle that says

You dont need more things. You need trees, bird calls in the morning, fresh air, thriving plants and real connection.

Right? I'm like, I can buy more great games that I can physically plan for a sum total of about 100$, to say nothing of some of the greatest literary works ever created for a few quid each... I'm really not too upset about not being able to afford playing GTA6 at 500fps?

Harold Halibut ($9.79) - a literally hand made game, crafted in stop motion. harold lives on a spaceship at the bottom of the ocean, but is driven to find somewhere new he could call home... but what is 'home', exactly? bittersweet, sincere, a treat. store.steampowered.com/app/924750/H...

when I got laid off from Vice, I later found out that members of the c-suite had awarded themselves bonuses that were higher than my annual salary. I hope that answers your question.

There's a common mythology that those with wealth and power must have "deserved" that wealth or power: they must have been smart, or good, or kind. But it's just that. A myth. They'll keep making bad decisions that make money hurting the lives of their own workers until we wrestle that axe BACK.

Yeah always so weird to me that the c-suite of these companies that quite literally sell their employees just escape any scrutiny. I mean I get it, 'lots of money + more resources' is always going to be attractive and it takes bravery to resist and plan for the long game, but...due diligence much?

Ubisoft EMBARGOED news to outlets about the layoffs and studio closures, FYI. Employees were told this morning. And then many reached out to us. Companies trying to embargo layoffs and closures might be the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen in my 16 years.

There's never been an easier time to boycott Microsoft, the most boring video game publisher in the business
If the BDS boycott is about justice for people living under oppression, a trivial benefit for gaming could be stopping Microsoft living rent-free in our brains.

Yeah it's all about the journey. Most of the 'twists' are fairly predictable but it's how you get there and what they mean for the characters that makes them feel significant.

Really didn't vibe with Marathon over the free week. What it boiled down to was I just didn't feel the extraction fantasy. The setting felt kinda incoherent to me, loot was confusing and traversal didn't feel good. Even successful runs didn't feel very satisfying.

I just feel like we need to put some distance between games as a medium and the Whedon eta of post-irony Marvel. Protagonists should be allowed to stay quiet for more than 30 seconds without inane self-talk and one or more quippy/sarcastic sidekicks. It just all blurs together otherwise.

Looks like they finally announced Until Dawn 2, so I can at least say it's what I worked on for years before being unceremoniously made redundant (along with lots of talented colleagues) because Sony decided to spend a gazillion dollars on buying 15 doomed live-service projects.

Hilarious and deeply insightful writing by @brianphillips.lol.
Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.
