Manchester's buses becoming under local control again is a testament to what can be achieved when local people are given the power to do what they actually want. All power to Burnham and the team at TfGM for years of hard work. Definitely a positive start to 2025!

Lack of long-term planning was a key theme in my research and a central reason Metro Vancouver has the solid base it does, whereas Greater Manchester is still building that foundation.

A good step to be sure, but the best approach would be to bite the fiscal bullet and just buy (or nationalise) the ROSCOs. They shouldn't exist. The operator, be that private or not, should own its rolling stock.

Her replacement, @heidialexander.bsky.social, has big shoes to fill, not just with the 'nationalisation' of rail but with the arguably more important task of constructing and implementing the Integrated National Transport Strategy that Haigh announced the day before (!) she resigned.
