There’s the 9/11 bit on The Day Today DVD where Chris Morris goes “coming up next, what is a hijacked airliner and HOW DOES IT CRASH?!” that lives rent free in my head when I see headlines like this.

Back in February, I spent a night on the world's fastest sleeper train: G897 covers the 2,500km between Beijing and Hong in just over 10 hours. I've written about the experience for The Times: www.thetimes.com/travel/desti... @seatsixtyone.bsky.social

This documentary by UP going behind the scenes of 'Big Boy' No.4014's historic coast to coast tour is well worth a watch. Fascinating to hear from the people that made it possible with previously unseen footage. Still have to pinch myself I had a cab ride... www.youtube.com/watch?v=szQ3...

It occurred to me the journey I did yesterday could only be possible in China. I was in Wuhan but I’d booked onto a tourist train that left Beijing, 760 miles away, at 1pm. G340 took me to the capital in 3h55m, a metro transfer later and I had plenty of time to board. High speed rail rocks.

Today’s thought: why aren’t carnival floats electric? I ask this having spent the morning at the Debrecen Flower Carnival which was bonkers, however the constant thrum and smoke from EU2 diesel engines became tiresome. @sniffpetrol.com, any thoughts?

Amtrak's Mardi Gras more than doubles predicted patronage after one year: Analysis - Trains
NEW ORLEANS — When two New Orleans-Mobile, Ala., round trips began on Aug. 18, 2025, many observers wondered whether the enthusiasm from the previous Saturday’s raucous inaugural events would translate into strong and sustained daily patronage. Guess what? It did. Southern Rail Commission and Amtrak personnel are celebrating the one-year anniversary of Amtrak’s Mardi Gras [...]Read More...

Travelling on PKP’s “Nieśpieszny” (Unhurried) train today from Zakopane to Warsaw. It is comprised of wonderfully restored 1970s coaches and an electric loco in period-correct liveries.

The last bastion of real main line steam in the world is still running six days a week in 2026. Pt47-65 is hauling the 1046 Wolsztyn to Poznan all-shacks stopper this morning.

Currently 38,000ft above Canada, typing this onboard an AA 787-9 using free WiFi. Part of me likes being connected during flights but it’s also a shame the days of being uncontactable on planes is disappearing rapidly. Anyway, there’ll be more American trains on this feed in the coming days.

A fun story to write for The Telegraph. The North Yorkshire Moors Railways has converted a steam locomotive to run on.... red diesel! US-built 'S160' No.2253 has been converted to be oil-fired, meaning it can run during heatwaves. It'll eventually burn cold-pressed rapeseed oil.

After spending three days with the ‘Big Boy’ and 611, a ‘Castle’ feels tiny (indeed, two of them double-heading doesn’t match the length of 4014). I love Vintage Trains’ Shakespeare Express as it offers affordable main line steam haulage (£25) and pay on the day is possible, as I did this morning.

This time last week I was in the cab of Union Pacific's wonderful 'Big Boy' No.4014, crossing the Genesee River as part of the historic coast-to-coast tour. You could not wipe the smile off my face all day I'm still pinching myself I had the opportunity to have a footplate ride.

A childhood dream came true yesterday. Travelled 175 miles with Union Pacific’s ‘Big Boy’ No.4014 between Buffalo, NY and Sayre, PA, including two hours on the footplate. Story - I am the only non-US journo to be granted access during the coast-to-coast tour - coming soon.

Publishing a magazine is a hugely risky and expensive business. It's therefore a massive kick in the teeth when an organisation such as @travmedia.bsky.social shortlist a (very, VERY good) website in their Travel Magazine of the Year category. Print media deserves better than this.

I often hear complaints - rightly so in many cases - that rail ticketing in the UK is confusing. But I don't think the grass is any greener in Europe. An example: I need to travel from Vienna to Budapest late next month. Logical thing to do is to look on the OBB site and it displays options.
