I am deeply concerned to hear of the #NorthSea collision between an oil tanker and a cargo vessel. My first thoughts are with the vessels crews and their families but as a marine biologist from #Lincolnshire I am also very worried about the impact on vulnerable marine species.

I was a coauthor on a paper with @dalyengellab.bsky.social and others that showed the Atlantic sixgill shark (aka the Cutest Shark) is a genetically distinct species. Previously the bigeye sixgill shark was thought to have a world-wide distribution. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
A profile of the head of a small shark at the surface of the bright blue sea. The shark is grey with a comically large mouth and huge, green eyes. It has six very large gill slits visible in the photo - hence the name sixgill shark. Most sharks have five gill slits that don't extend to the underside of the head.
