GBE | Lack of Evidence for Gene-Level Convergence Linked to Evolutionary Shifts in Torpor Among Placental Mammals

Photo: An eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) during torpor. Photo credit: Danielle L. Levesque (coauthor of this study).

Inset: Phylogeny of 190 placental mammals analyzed in this study. Circles represent torpor use for both extant species and ancestral nodes with high-confidence reconstructions. Tree branches are annotated with patterns of positive selection and losses in the GPR35 protein-coding gene. This gene is among those most strongly associated with torpor evolution, yet explains less than 10% of variance in torpor use across species.

Hummingbirds.
A four panel comic. In panel 1, a rufous hummingbird flies down toward a large hummingbird feeder with as many as 6 holes on top. He thinks "The humans put up a new feeder!" In panel 2, he lands on the feeder and gazes down at it. He thinks "It's huge. Many of us could feed here at once." In panel 3, we see a close up view of the hummingbird, and he's thinking "This could end the ancient rivalries. Usher in an era of peace. Interesting." In panel 4, an Anna's hummingbird hovers over the feeder and says "Hey, can I have some necta-" and the rufous hummingbird says "No."

Come share your research and learn about the most exciting areas of integrative, comparative, and organismal biology in Pittsburgh, PA on January 3-7, 2027. The abstract deadline is August 28 at 11:59 PM HST.
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) encourages interdisciplinary research across levels of biological organization, from molecules to ecosystems. The presentations at SICB’s annual meeting integrate knowledge and approaches across fields to advance biological knowledge, education, and outreach.

A few guidelines, as you are preparing your submission:
•	If you have not already done so, you will first be asked to create a profile within the meeting platform.*
•	Once you submit, you will be able to log in and edit your abstract until the deadline.
•	Titles are limited to 100 characters and abstracts are limited to 225 words.
•	The Best Student Presentation competitions for some divisions require the submission of an extended abstract. You can view guidelines here: https://sicb.org/awards/best-student-presentation-bsp-program/

Questions about the abstract submission process can be addressed to the SICB Program Officer, Matt McHenry: ProgramOfficer@sicb.org.

We also welcome proposal submissions for symposia at SICB2028 in Los Angeles, CA! The form is here. Initial proposals require only a concept summary. For questions or guidance see our Symposium Proposal Guidelines, or contact the Program Officer Elect, Britt Heidinger, with questions at programofficer.elect@sicb.org.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh!

Sincerely,

Matt McHenry
