The #Medicaid work requirement train is revving up again. Let's be clear about this: Medicaid is a health insurance program, not a jobs program. There is no evidence that Medicaid work requirements improve health or produce other benefits. They are a barrier to care & a driver of inequity (1/n)

1. Biden got to $183 billion in student loan forgiveness, in large part by making loan forgiveness on the books actually work. 2. The programs are created by Congress - but Trump and McMahon could simply decide to make the programs dysfunctional again by adding admin burdens.

This paper is a great example of solid evidence of systemic discrimination: "Black taxpayers are audited at 2.9 to 4.7 times the rate of non-Black taxpayers." This reflects a series of choices built into the IRS audit algorithm: focus on the EITC, and overclaiming of credits.

The idea here is not just predatory looting by the billionaire class, but to cut the informational, administrative and coercive capacities of the state for *future* governments. If you hollow out the state bureaucratically it is rendered useless when your opponents come to power.

"The progressive movement needs to change. We need to re-emphasize core economic issues every time some of these cultural war issues are brought up," Casar said. "So when we hear Republicans attacking queer Americans again, I think the progressive response needs to be that a trans person didn't deny your health insurance claim, a big corporation did - with Republican help. We need to connect the dots for people that the Republican Party obsession with these culture war issues is driven by Republicans' desire to distract voters and have them look away while Republicans pick their pocket."

This is also true in other wealthy countries. What is different is that US life expectancy, even for those with higher education, is shorter than in peer countries. We're all being hurt by massive inequality, a dysfunctional health care system, and a miserly welfare state.
Figure showing gap in life expectancy between those with and without college degrees, which has growing since 2000. And for both groups has declined precipitously since 2020.
